Should Hashimoto sufferers have the covid vaccine

Adam10 profile image
25 Replies

I suffer from Hashimoto’s disease and hypothyroidism for past 6 years. I am 65 years of age. I have just been offered a first jab of the Covid vaccine by NHS for this Sunday. It just occurs to me, as I have an auto immune disease, is it safe for me to have the vaccine? Am I medically exempt not by choice but by existing medical condition? I do not have access to a local GP as it is the weekend now. I want to have the vaccine. Please advise.

I have had my jab and I have Hashimoto’s. You could die if you get Covid.

I have Hashimoto's and I'll definitely get the vaccine when my time comes. We're not immunocompromised. Autoimmune thyroid disorder is not part of the immune system that fights off infections such as Covid 19.

I had my first jab last Tuesday. Did get raging headache couple days later and you do feel tired. Didnt feel a thing when paramedic did it and no ache of arm unless you sleep on that side, only got sore a couple of days later when in bed. I’m still here 😁

Adam10, There is no evidence so far that people with thyroid disorders (autoimmune or otherwise) are at any particular risk from any Covid-19 vaccination. As these are such new vaccines, only time will tell though.

You can look at the comments on our poll to get some idea of how people with thyroid disorders who have already been vaccinated, are or are not being affected.

The paramedic had a list of what can cause an allergic reaction, I showed him my list of allergies and medications taken and I was fine so all I can say if anyone is worried print out your medications and allergies and let the person doing it see then they can go and check for you.

Hello I’ve got hashis and another autoimmune condition. I had my jab a week ago and I did get q a strong reaction - high temp and lethargy for two days. But I’m grateful to have had it. If that’s a small dose of the real thing I really don’t want to get the real thing!!!

I have mine at 11am this morning. A little bit nervous but i know - because of having hashimoto’s- but i know having covid could be a lot worse due to IL6 and cytokine storms! No one can tell you 100% you’ll be ok but getting covid’s got to be worse for us right?!

I have hashimotos and I’ve had Covid! Still alive! It was very mild and I’m very lucky. I have also had vaccine as I’m a nurse. Don’t over think it it’s safe! ☺️

Hi I’m glad you had your vaccine and everything ok :) I’ve been told to get the Oxford vaccine if you have alllergic reactions I’m anaphylactic is this true ? or is it safe to get any ? 😀

When I had mine I had to fill out a form and it will ask about allergies. To be honest I don’t know what the ingredients are in the vaccines but if you have an allergy to whatever’s in it then they advise not to have it. When you book your appointment just run through it with them and see what they say ☺️

It’ll be the Oxford vaccine for anaphylaxis sufferers. You won’t be allowed pfizer if you’ve had anaphylaxis in the past

Hashimoto's itself does not make us immunosuopressed. I had my Pfizer Covid jab on Thursday evening. A slight ache in my arm was the only side-effect, far less of an issue than I experience with my flu jabs! No worries at all now about my second one.

I have hashimotos snd had the Pfizer vaccination on 17 Jan. No problems.

I have Hashimoto’s, PsA, Adrenal Insufficiency, Colitis - all autoimmune disorders - and had the Pfizer vaccine a week ago.

I had my jab a week ago, I don’t have Hashi, I have other autoimmune conditions including diabetes. I also have hypothyroidism as my thyroid was destroyed by radiation in the early 1950s. A sore arm was all I noticed in the next few days.

You most definitely should have a vaccine. We all need to have it to get anything like normal life back. You are not immunocompromised. My 87 year old Mum is immunocompromised due to a medication she has to take. She's had her vaccination. Her arm was a little sore for a couple of days, that's all. The vaccine is inert. It won't harm you. Those who are immunocompromised will simply make less antibodies than a normal person, so their protection is a little less.

We need to get over all this worry about it. We've all been vaccinated against a whole host of different things in our life. This is just another one.

Just wondering at what level is one considered immunocomprimised? As my neutrophil level was below bottom of range.

snow22, If you're at all worried about immunocompromised, it's probably best to talk to your doctor about it.

I’m a bit GP-phobic and Boris-sceptical, and my 11 month old Siamese kitten nearly died from what specialist vets think was an autoimmune response to his booster jab 11 years ago which causes a certain amount of vaccine-anxiety (he recovered, thankfully and is in fine fettle, howling, claiming starvation as I type 🙄) and despite that, I’ll be rolling up my sleeve when the time comes.

I do feel anxious about it, but I figure it comes under the category of gritting my teeth and doing my bit. Duty to NHS staff and key workers - those kind of ideas. It’s the least I can do, really, when other people have taken far bigger risks with their health on my behalf. So, when I look at it that way, hell yeah, count me in! But I confess, I will be needing my big girl pants when the time comes!

Won't be rushing, and I caught covid in April and had it bad. But that's me.

I have hashimoto's and a trigger happy autoimmune system and rare and incurable neurological disorder that I personally believe was triggered by vaccines and radiotherapy. Therefore, I am not willing to take an experimental vaccine.

chrisbuy63, The subject of vaccination is a very emotive one. Everyone here will have their own personal views about vaccinations. To be fair to everyone, we cannot allow general discussion about the pros and cons of vaccination.

For this reason, I have edited your comment.
