LEVOTHYROXINE - WHICH BRAND TO TRY OVER OTHERS

Hi. I am a Graves patient who will end up on block and replace. Are there any brands of levo that people suit better than others. Is it just pot luck although I suspect there is more to it than that. Any brands I should stay away from? Do you shop around pharmacies to see who dispenses the brand you prefer. Thanks for reading. I appreciate your time. Kindest regards always NIKEGIRL

I decided against block and replace so hopefully someone who did this will be able to help.

I think it’s just trial and error as everyone is different. You’ll only know once you’ve started

I suggest you first of all find out what makes are available. I think you get Aspen Eltroxin (not the same as Mercury Pharma Eltroxin in the UK), AbbVie Synthroid and at least one other.

Then identify what the ingredients are, what dosages are available and anything else you can find out.

Obviously, avoid any that contain ingredients you cannot tolerate.

To begin with, it would probably be inadvisable to ask for a specific make to be prescribed. See how it goes. But NZ systems might be different...

Hi. Thanks for taking the time to reply. I do appreciate that. I don’t really want to take levothyroxine but I think that is good advice and I will do some research/investigating into it. Thank you

I’m started PTU and been taking 200mg for one week and prior to that my liver enzymes have always been elevated. My blood test from yesterday has come back and You wouldn’t believe it. 5 of my liver enzymes that were elevated out of range are now in range. That’s crazy

That is good news. :-)

You are by no means the first to find thyroid medicines (whether thyroid hormones or anti-thyroid medicines) help to improve numerous bodily systems. Serves to emphasise how thyroid affects absolutely everything.
