Hi folks I wondered if anyone could offer me some advice please
I was doing really well on Thyrogold then I started to get stomach problems gastritis very bad I’ve already got erosive gastritis and a hiatus hernia . my both my son and daughter got Covid one with breathing difficulties and the worry made me very ill !!! I could taste blood ! (Derby hospital full of Covid ) so been self medicating .
I have been waiting for an MRI of my stomach for over a year ! Got cancelled due to COVID last April !
I was so ill and worried I thought I would be taken into hospital and catch Covid myself so went back on Levo 100mg and Omeprazole morning & night . I feel so ill had to go urgent care centre they say just wait for scan ? Which could be weeks !
Got to carry on taking PPI for my stomach and the Levo but I feel so hypo !!! Cold tired breathless I’m not sure whether to private for a scan see what’s happening then go back on Thyrogold because I’m sure the Levo is causing gastritis!
I panicked incase they wouldn’t treat me on the
Unprescribed Thyrogold !!!!
Sorry for long post any suggestions or advice I would be so grateful .
Thankyou Kazbe x

Thankyou you too 😀 do you mind me asking which NDT you are on as you obviously have a sensitive stomach like me ? I’ve tried most and been unsuccessful !
Don't know if I will be much help but felt compelled to respond. I have just had another endoscopy (and colonoscopy) not sure why yours is so delayed ? I have been told I have erosive gastritis also (amongst other issues). I have been on levo for 16 years and find it very strange that we both have this? Coincidence, maybe.
As regards the PPI, I take my first in the afternoon at least 4 hours after the levo as I took it in the morning and felt terrible, did some research and found it does cause levo to not work aswell.
Hi Kaz,Omy goodness so sorry to hear you been so poorly. I do hope you get your results very soon, and start to feel better quickly.
I have also been poorly got a new endo privately and I asked to have a trial of liquid levo I paid privately for it I wish I hadnt bothered as soon as it started going into my system I felt so ill the noise was like my stomach was turning over and the pain in the top of my stomach was unbearable...I kept taking it for a week ..i tried hard to persevere had to stop sent email to endo didn't hear anything for days then he got back and said stop I had already.. turns out cant take it at all. So I've had to go back on my levo tabs 150mcgs but I've had to ring gp weds because my stomach is so upset doc has put me on a IBS tablet 3 times a day and a sickness tabs 3 times a day I haven't got IBS but im taking it and see how I go..I've asked endo if I can try lactose free levo tabs he has also suggested i try a little t3 with my levo ....I'm not sure about that...we will see I want to get my stomach right first.
Sending hugs and lots of love take care hang on in there Kaz you'll get better. And best of luck to your children I hope they also get better soon.
Oh bless you it sounds like your going through it too sending hugs your way for a speedy recovery I’m currently sat in A&E I feel dreadful my stomach and breathing so I’m hoping they can get to the bottom of what going on with me !!!! Il keep you posted on how I get on xx
Until I started reading this web site, I never realised, or was told, of any connection between thyroid disease and stomach acid, which I have suffered with for years.
I was tested for acid with sensors down my nose into my stomach for 24h.
I have found the effects of each of the anti acid tablets wear off after a while. At the moment I am on 40mg of pantoprazole which came after 30mg Lansoprazole, which again followed, Omeprazole. I am now feeling the Pantoprazole is also losing effectiveness.
Been on 100micrograms Levothyroxine for years. Brand at moment = accord. Have just ordered first Medichecks but had to upgrade as could not get any blood quantity out of fingers!
Even if we don’t start on full replacement dose, most people need to increase levothyroxine dose slowly upwards in 25mcg steps (retesting 6-8 weeks after each increase) until on, or near full replacement dose
Consider starting levothyroxine at a dosage of 1.6 micrograms per kilogram of body weight per day (rounded to the nearest 25 micrograms) for adults under 65 with primary hypothyroidism and no history of cardiovascular disease.
Traditionally we have tended to start patients on a low dose of levothyroxine and titrate it up over a period of months. RCT evidence suggests that for the majority of patients this is not necessary and may waste resources.
For patients aged >60y or with ischaemic heart disease, start levothyroxine at 25–50μg daily and titrate up every 3 to 6 weeks as tolerated.
For ALL other patients start at full replacement dose. For most this will equate to 1.6 μg/kg/day (approximately 100μg for a 60kg woman and 125μg for a 75kg man).

I am concerned about the effects worry has on you. It seems that excessive worrying is having a bad effect on you. My advice is stop stop worrying so much. Easy to say and very hard to do.
I can say thin because I was in a similar place. Worrying did not help at all it just made things worse. I spent a lot of physical and mental energy worrying and it did move things forward one bit. In fact it made me not work out what i needed to do to resolve the situation.
I think that being hypo contributes to excessive worry too. Ridha Ahmed talks about the psychological effects of thyroid problems in his book. its a good book but I don't agree with everything he says. amazon.co.uk/Thyroid-Soluti...

I felt exactly the same and on same meds.I stopped everything and though I have had some acid on occasions I feel better in myself.ALL disease starts in the gut.I'm trying a new protocol at present, lots of probiotics ,fermented foods and Dr Groups Detoxadine.Early days but will let you know.If you are taking Omniparzole you should take them first thing on an empty stomach,I was taking Lansaprazole.
Although low stomach acid can be associated with hypothyroidism, this is certainly not always the case. When people have been diagnosed with gastritis, oesophagitis, hiatus hernia, stomach ulcers and the like, and have had gastroscopies and manometry testing which proves that their stomach acid levels are high, then medication to prevent further acid damage is vital. It should be strongly stated that acid levels should be investigated before assuming that low levels are the issue and embarking on an acid-adding regime, which could have serious repercussions. Blithely stating that low acid is most likely to be the problem rather than high, is a dangerous path to follow. Even when certain sites and "experts" are quoted, their advice does not apply to everyone, and could be extremely harmful if followed when not the correct thing to do. I know several hypothyroid people who suffer with high stomach acid, so it is not at all unusual. Test before treat should be the advice given before any other.
You have had a stressful time haven’t you, this can aggravate erosive gastritis, in some cases even cause it.I take NDT and Omeprazole as I have hiatus hernia and Barrett’s oesophagus. I have taken the Omeprazole twice a day for nearly ten years . I have queried taking it fir this length of time with GPs they assured me it’s perfectly normal to treat for as long as needed.
I do know that since taking Omeprazole I have virtually zero stomach issues. I tried stopping myself once but was back to daily pain and heartburn.
I don’t fall into the umbrella “low stomach acid due to hypothyroidism “ category. I think it’s very common but has a number of exceptions. I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism as a child an had the endoscopy and started on Omeprazole at sixty. It may be I previously had low stomach acid. I certainly never had any issues I could not sort by avoiding certain foods and otc tablets when necessary.
I have taken Omeprazole with Levo initially, and then Thyroid S most recently with Thyro gold which doesn’t suit me so well.
