How to switch to Metavive, from NDT?

I've been on this dessicated thyroid for about four to five months but without much result. I'm on five grains, and was wondering how I could switch to Metavive, because I'm guessing you can't stop 5 grains overnight, or can you?

Anyone got any tips? Thanks!

Hi

5 grains NDT is the highest dose I've seen on here btw!

So I'm not surprised you say 'without much result'

What are your symptoms?

Essential to get your thyroid markers checked

TSH, FT3, FT4, TGO and TPO antibodies

TSH should be about 1

FT3 and FT4 in the upper part of their range

Then repost on here for advice

When the results are in, if you then decide to choose Metavive over NDT

Then suggest you try dosing by weight ?

So, 5 grains NDT are 300 mgs

Metavive comes in 30 mgs, so 10 capsules = 5 NDT

All the best!

You would think that on 5 grains of thyroid I would have some improvement in my cold hands and feet though, and other symptoms, right? I don't know, but from what I've read metavive is really potent, I think it could be more potent than what I'm taking now. I have seen other people say the same though with this brand of thyroid im taking now; that it's not very strong compared to other ndts.

It's tricky really because if I switched to the metavive equivelant of what im taking now (10 capsules) it could be too much. Maybe 5 or 6 capsules instead, or less?

I’ve seen a higher dose of NDT (you see all sorts when you’ve posted here as long as I have, under this username and another) :) but that does seem like it ought to be having more impact that it is.

I suppose my questions would be, are you sure you’re on NDT and not a knock off drug?

And then, assuming you’re sure, were you taking a supplement with biotin in before the latest test? Biotin can affect thyroid blood test assays and provide false results. Just a thought. Your FT3 was over range and your FT4 well up the range. If anything you were overmedicated (if we ignore the strange TSH result).

Metavive doesn’t have any T3 in it (unless you’re going for the bovine version, and even then, it’s not a lot and there’s no assurance it’s consistently the same amount in each pill because it’s thyroid extract). You may find you just can’t manage on less NDT than you’ve been taking.

I’m sure you know that thyroid hormone resistance is possible—I take it you’ve done the usual things like try T3 only?

The blood test you see on my profile was when I were at 3 grains of thyroid, I know it may seem like I was overmedicated based on the blood work, but I don't think that accurately represents the amount of hormone I was actually absorbing, because I was very much still hypo at the time of that test.

Does metavive really not contain t3? I thought it contained all of the thyroid hormones, but they just couldn't legally declare the hormone content without it being a prescription drug?

Lots of info about Metavive to be found across the forum. I’m not an expert on it but bought myself some when it stopped being possible to purchase Nature Throid (haven’t taken it, mind—hoping RLC put it back on sale again soon).

Have a look at what others have said.
