Vitamin B12 Folate levels?!

Hi all, I am a newbie on this brilliant forum and just like to say firstly thank you to everyone for the help we can all give to each other!.

I was diagnosed with thyroid problems way back in early 2000, over that time my Thyroxine level has increased to 125mg and about to be increased again. But my question to you all is my doctor wants to sort out my folate which I have been on tablets for over a month now but my doctor is talking about Vitamin B12 being low and wanting to get that sorted to be able to properly steady my folate &thyroid levels & meds. We discussed 2options injection or oral, with injection it would have to be travelling to and from medical centre for a few weeks, but because of my mobility problems and personal issues I opted for oral treatment.

Has anyone anyone have any suggestions for me to be able to help myself ie: diet, etc?!. My age is 57 I am struggling with either my asthma or they now wonder if it could be COPD, tests in progress. I have fibromyalgia, along with crippling degeneration in my spine, arthritis, chari malformation with pain in arms, numbness and pins&needles in both hands, anxiety&depression. Sorry I really am not self pitying, just trying to be honest in the hope someone has any ideas.

Thank you for all your thoughts and wishes, this site makes it very helpful to ask for advice!, stay safe everyone 💖

How much did you take? I'm not a doctor but you should be fine, you can always ring them if you are worried

Can you provide any numbers?

1) What was your folate test result, including the reference range?

2) What was your vitamin B12 result, including the reference range?

3) What supplements have you been prescribed and at what dose?

If both your B12 and your folate levels were low you really should have been given a prescription for B12 first, and then started a folate supplement a week or two later.

Low vitamin levels suggests you are possibly under medicated

Fibromyalgia is frequently low Ft3, either due to inadequate dose, or poor conversion of Ft4 to ft3

Low Ft3 leads to low vitamin levels

Low vitamin levels leads to poor conversion.....it’s a vicious circle

Please add actual results and ranges on thyroid and vitamin results if you have them

Do you always get same brand of levothyroxine

Which brand?

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 plus both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested. Also EXTREMELY important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

Low vitamin levels are extremely common, especially if you have autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto's) diagnosed by raised Thyroid antibodies

Do you know if you have Hashimoto’s

Ask GP to test vitamin D and ferritin levels too

Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and before eating or drinking anything other than water .

Last dose of Levothyroxine 24 hours prior to blood test. (taking delayed dose immediately after blood draw).

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

Is this how you do your tests?

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or thyroid antibodies or all relevant vitamins

Medichecks Thyroid plus antibodies and vitamins

If you can get GP to test vitamins and antibodies then cheapest option for just TSH, FT4 and FT3

If B12 is low GP should do full test for Pernicious Anaemia before starting any B12

If cause of low B12 is PA you must have injections

If cause low low B12 is being hypothyroid then B12 sublingual supplements should help

Low folate

supplementing a good quality daily vitamin B complex, one with folate in (not folic acid) may be more beneficial than just folic acid

This can help keep all B vitamins in balance and will help improve B12 levels too

Difference between folate and folic acid

Many Hashimoto’s patients have MTHFR gene variation and can have trouble processing folic acid.

B vitamins best taken after breakfast

Igennus Super B is good quality and cheap vitamin B complex. Contains folate. Full dose is two tablets per day. Many/most people may only need one tablet per day. Certainly only start on one per day (or even half tablet per day for first couple of weeks)

Often cheaper on Amazon

Or Thorne Basic B is another option that contain folate, but is large capsule

If you are taking vitamin B complex, or any supplements containing biotin, remember to stop these 7 days before ALL BLOOD TESTS , as biotin can falsely affect test results

With low B12 result taking a B12 supplement as well as a B Complex (to balance all the B vitamins) initially for first 2-4 months, then once your serum B12 is over 500 (or Active B12 level has reached 70), stop the B12 and just carry on with the B Complex.
