I hope you’re all keeping safe and nourished in these strange times.
My endo just switched me from NDT to Eltroxin.
I was on Eltroxin when I first got diagnosed with Hashi’s in 2016. Then Euthyrox. Then NDT from 2017 and started to do better. Was diagnosed with a conversion problem back then, hence the need for NDT.
I only agreed to switch now since I am running out of NDT due to global shortages. I am extremely apprehensive. Today is my first day back in synthetics. My endo seems to think my conversion problem has cleared up and I might suddenly do well on Eltroxin.
I don’t know what my question is. I’m just scared of becoming as sick as I was in 2016 and 2017 again- panic attacks, debilitating fatigue, eczema, constitution, muscle pain and weakness, terrible restless leg syndrome at night.
Man! 🥺 Any advice or word of encouragement? Anyone who actually started to do better on synthetics later on?

Recommend getting FULL thyroid and vitamin testing done NOW, so you can track changes....if not done so already
As you have Hashimoto’s are you on strictly gluten free diet
What vitamin supplements are you currently taking
Often vitamin levels will crash when T3 or NDT is withdrawn
For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 tested. EXTREMELY important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12
Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and before eating or drinking anything other than water .
Last dose of Levothyroxine 24 hours prior to blood test. (taking delayed dose immediately after blood draw).
This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)
If/when also on T3, or NDT make sure to take last third or quarter of daily dose 8-12 hours prior to test, even if this means adjusting time or splitting of dose day before test
Is this how you do your tests?
Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or thyroid antibodies or all relevant vitamins
I am strictly gluten-free and dairy-free. Don’t tolerate them since Hashimotos.
I take daily selenium, magnesium, B-complex.
I do make sure to medicine-fast before a test. My endo screens for tsh, t4 and t3, deemingæy refuses to do ft4 and ft3. My next test is in two weeks.
I didn’t know vitamins and minerals may drop after a switch, but I’ll try get a baseline panel done if it wasn’t done in my my most recent panel last week.
Might there be an adjustment period? How much time should I give this to see full effect? (My plan B is to find an integrative physician who’ll prescribe NDT.)
PS. I’m in South Africa but lived in the UK for a while and can appreciate the NHS shortfalls. It’s not easy being chronically sick or disabled at the moment... (if ever)
As you are gluten and dairy intolerant Likely to always need the addition of small doses of T3 alongside levothyroxine or NDT
Good you are keeping eye on vitamin levels and supplementing, remember to stop taking vitamin B complex a week before blood tests as biotin can falsely affect test results
Even in S Africa....with Hashimoto’s vitamin D might be low. Do you test annually?
