Hi, I have lots of symptoms and very confused as I am suffering symptoms of both over and under active thyroid, I had bloods done and my doctor didn’t say much only that they are pointing to overactive but my t4 is normal. My antibody test came back as 436 when Range’s should be 0-115. Please can anyone help me with this as it’s all new to me and the anti bodies bit has worried me , it’s my TG anti bodies x

Hello Loopylucie and welcome to the forum :

Do you have copies of the blood test your doctor was referring to ?

That will be the first step in us helping you find out what is going on :

It sounds like Hashimoto's which is a autoimmune thyroid disease which can give symptoms of hyper and hypothyroidism and for which there is treatment.

If you go onto the Thyroid UK website, who are the charity who support this amazing forum, you will find background reading to all thyroid health issues along with so much more.

If you have any blood tests results please post them up here along with the ranges and people more knowledgeable than me will advise accordingly.

We generally ask for a full thyroid blood panel which includes a TSH, T3,T4, antibodies, and also the essential core strength vitamins and minerals - ferritin, folate, B12 and folate :

With these results and ranges you will be talked through and explained of anything that seems amiss and suggestions offered as to supplements to improve your wellbeing.

If your doctor will not, or has not run this full blood test there are private companies on the Thyroid uk website who can undertake this for you and then you simply put the results and ranges up on here for explanation, as you will see, if you care to read through other peoples questions and the answers they receive on this rolling forum.

Sounds more like Hashimoto’s (autoimmune hypothyroid)

Hashimoto’s frequently starts with transient hyperthyroid results and symptoms before becoming increasingly hypothyroid

Do you have the actual results and ranges you can add?

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 plus both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested. Also EXTREMELY important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

Low vitamin levels are extremely common, especially if you have autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto's) diagnosed by raised Thyroid antibodies. And common with Graves’ disease (hyperthyroid autoimmune disease)

Ask GP to test vitamin levels

Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and before eating or drinking anything other than water .

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or thyroid antibodies or all relevant vitamins

To confirm hyperthyroid autoimmune thyroid disease (Graves disease) it’s ESSENTIAL to test TSI or Trab antibodies

If TPO or TG thyroid antibodies are high this is usually due to Hashimoto’s (commonly known in UK as autoimmune thyroid disease).

About 90% of all primary hypothyroidism in Uk is due to Hashimoto’s. Low vitamin levels are particularly common with Hashimoto’s. Gluten intolerance is often a hidden issue to.
