Hi NWA6,

President Macron will make a statement at 8 pm French time so we’ll need to wait and see. From my reading online of national French papers it looks like Paris and many large cities (Marseille, Lyon, Toulouse etc.) will have to go into curfew at night... I fear it might require more action than that as the rate of infection is high in France as it is getting very high here too. Unfortunately no real decision is being made in the UK... lack of leadership and always half measures taken too late. Fingers crossed we’ll be able to cope. Scary times indeed!

Perhaps Grey Goose will be able to give us an update.

Greygoose hasn't the foggiest idea what's going on! I don't have television and can't stand French radio. It'll filter down to me eventually, but I'm in isolation, anyway.

That is the best place to be and I wish I could be in self isolation myself but I have to look after my Dad and my family because there is no one else who can do it except me.

Hi GG, hope you’re keeping as well as possible in such crazy times! Indeed we need to be so careful and shield ourselves.

Well, apparently Macron has declared that Paris and many large cities (Marseille, Lyon, Toulouse etc.) will have a curfew from 9 pm to 6 am. Perhaps the UK should do the same. It’s certainly a most worrying situation. So scary and devastating for all but so tough on the young generations.

Keep well and stay safe. x

Oh, lord! Just as the theatres were reopening! Doesn't affect me, but I know plenty of people it does affect.

Thanks for letting me know.

You’re welcome.

I know it’s going to be tough on the arts as well as on many people who have lost and many more who will lose their jobs, their livelihoods but I feel the most important issue at this time is to prevent the spreading of the virus until a “safe “ efficacious vaccine is found. If not many people will die (too many have already died). Let’s hope we will overcome this virus, or at least control it like other viruses but it looks like it will be with us for quite a while. Depressing thought.

I have been drawing similarities with people having to endure a war, although it’s not a war between people/ nations but a war against a new tough virus.

I wonder how people coped mentally during the war... not knowing whether they would die, whether their loved ones would survive, whether they would have enough to feed their families. It must have been horrific. How did they survive such a tragedy?

Can’t wait for better times. Take care everyone.

There are some similarities. But the difference is, that there's nothing we can do except isolate ourself. There's no 'war effort' we can make to help, as they had in the last war - 'digging for victory' comes to mind. We can't go an work in munitions factories, or sacrifice our iron railings. And, the problem therefore is that we don't have the feeling of doing something useful. I think that must have helped a lot to be able to actually see you were doing something, instead of just staying home alone, wondering what the hell is going on.

Yes probably that was helpful but it must have been incredibly hard to cope. Not knowing whether the war would ever end, whether we would lose our respective nationalities or our lives.

Anyway our “role “ is to prevent the spread of the virus and stay safe. However everyone must do so but many people just behave recklessly.

Oh, they do indeed! There's signs up everywhere in our town saying that wearing a mask in the street is obligatory, and there will be hefty fines for those that don't. But, you still see all these people walking around unmasked, so to speak, as if the regulations don't apply to them!

I’ve always wondered how people coped during the war too. An unbelievably horrific time go through. This is awful too, of course. So many people really suffering in so many ways. Fortunately in our family we only have to worry about staying our distance from others

Indeed! It is sad it takes such a crisis to actually make us reflect properly! I suppose if we go through life without too many major traumas it is difficult to think deeply about the horrors that wars bring.

This time round the difficulty is when so many people find themselves totally alone and some young people find the situation so hard, many mental health problems ensue. Also families living in small flats with no garden and abuse.

Can’t wait for better times! Stay safe.

Yes I just saw it on Sky it is on Fox news as well.

I think Macron is going to make a statement about it very soon.

I think the UK will be doing a full lockdown during half term to stop the spread. I personally cannot see an end to this nightmare. I was watching people in Liverpool mixing together in the streets and I am thinking why on earth would they do this when you know how bad it is? It is a crazy world at the moment.

Round here the infection rate is very low - despite a small-ish university. Like everywhere, we don't know how it breaks down between the population at large and students, those infected in hospital or one of the huge number of old people's homes ... but everyone is very careful, good at social distancing and respectful. It was busier in summer than I've ever seen before on the beach, but visitors were also good at distancing. It would be such a shame if we have a national lock-down dumped on us and local businesses fail just because the infection rate is so much higher hundreds of miles away.

Macron has indeed curfewed eight (I think) cities

I agree, it’s a nightmare! Some people are really selfish and sadly rather ignorant, not actually realising how serious this virus is! The problem was that lockdown started too late and finished too soon. I couldn’t believe watching on television all those people mixing without any distancing on the beaches! I was horrified. They all seem to believe that the virus had disappeared.

What will it take to make such people understand?

I fear we’re in for a rough time now, especially with Winter approaching. Keep safe.

Dear JGHB, yes, we saw indeed incredible scenes of crowded beaches, but did the infection rates go up? No, they nicely stayed at the same level. Please, dear people, do not be taken in by all this hysteria, the press are only saying one thing, no dissenting voices are allowed to speak, and social distancing measures, good hygiene and wearing masks are adequate to control the virus. The government are irresponsible in playing on people’s fears and stoking it daily. Are there really no other news from around the world except Covid? The collateral damage that results from not being able to see your GP is unimaginable. There will be a lot more deaths from untreated cancer and other chronic conditions. I think Britain should wake up and demand to be able to see a GP, to have access to hospital treatment and most of all, stop this fearmongering.

Just be aware they are now combining the Winter Flu figures with SARS-C- to enhance the numbers.

JGBH profile image
JGBH in reply to Marz

Yes it’s a good point. Wonder why they’re doing so but not surprised as the government’s actions/lack of are shambolic!

However, as someone who is in the high vulnerable group - not just hypothyroid but having several serious autoimmune issues and taking strong immunosuppressants and steroids - I am not prepared to take any silly risks.

It’s quite obvious there’s a sharp rise of covid infections now. It was to be expected when large groups of people congregate together like students returning to universities and many not behaving sensibly (yes, some do but not enough), children back at schools- often 30 in a small poorly ventilated classroom (state schools), and too many people still behaving irresponsibly, not wearing masks or under their chins and not distancing. Unfortunately there’s no cure for stupidity.

This virus is new and dangerous although scientists know a little more about it by now but not enough to allow us to treat it with slightly less concern yet. This virus is not fear-mongering unfortunately. So we need to treat it with respect and act accordingly if we want to survive it. Stay safe.

Hey everyone - I hope you will all be OK. I am in the US and it is starting to surge badly here too - some states worse than others but eventually they are expecting the hospitals to be overwhelmed in every state. . You all are so right about how dumb some people are - The grocery stores have one way signs on the aisles and plastic partitions up at the registers. I read that some woman took off her mask and spat on some elderly man who walked down an aisle the wrong way. Plus now the staff are allowed to let customers in without masks as there have been episodes of violence against store employees because they said they could not come in without a mask so stores are now trying to protect the employees from these vicious ignorant people. Would you believe it. I believe in both cases they were arrested but the damage was done. I also see folks not wearing masks nor social distancing. What is going to happen to all of us? I have been isolating all summer but I think I need to do a doctor appointment and am afraid to go. This is so scary. I heard this nightmare may not end uyntil 2022. I hope I heard wrong. Please stay safe everyone
