Hi I'm new here I was just wondering if someone can help me I'm really desperate. I have hypothyroidism and suffer with my thyroid hormone resistance. I desperately need and want to loose weight but nothing is happening. Been like this for bout 5 years now. Doctors don't help me I'm just left to get on with it coz they don't care. What can I do I'm so desperate. I eat healthy and exercise regularly but nothing works. The doctors won't prescribe me levothyroxine drug coz I have a fast heart rate. I'm so desperate for help coz I feel fat and disgusting and no one will help me and I don't know what else to try to help me out. Any help or advice I'd really appreciate it, thank you.

Welcome to the forum.

It's really tough, isn't it? In my experience it's pretty well impossible to lose weight if your bloods are bad. Do you have any recent blood results you can share - ideally including nutrients, because you will need these to be good too. Full blood testing would be TSH, free T4, free T3, thyroid antibodies plus ferritin, folate, vit D and B12.

I don't know about levo + fast heart rate issues - and if it's all brands of levo or whether eg liquid levo would be better, or whether it also rules out lio - so hopefully someone will be along soon who does.

Hi I will have to contact my doctor about a recent blood test result. The only one I have to hand on me is one from 2018. It's says my

T4 was 32.9

T3 was 8.3

THS was 3.2

Sorry I'm not really good at explaining things. But this is what I have to hand from my appointment i had with them.

Welcome to the forum

First thing is, do you have any actual blood test results? if not will need to get hold of copies.

You are legally entitled to printed copies of your blood test results and ranges.

The best way to get access to current and historic blood test results is to register for online access to your medical record and blood test results

UK GP practices are supposed to offer everyone online access for blood test results. Ring and ask if this is available and apply to do so if possible, if it is you may need "enhanced access" to see blood results.

In reality many GP surgeries do not have blood test results online yet

Alternatively ring receptionist and request printed copies of results. Allow couple of days and then go and pick up.

Important to see exactly what has been tested and equally important what hasn’t been tested yet

Frequently only TSH and Ft4 tested

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 plus both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested. Also EXTREMELY important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

Low vitamin levels are extremely common, especially if you have autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto's) diagnosed by raised Thyroid antibodies

Have you had thyroid antibodies tested or ultrasound scan of thyroid?

Ask GP to test vitamin levels if not been tested yet

Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and before eating or drinking anything other than water .

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip, best not mentioned to GP or phlebotomist)

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or thyroid antibodies or all relevant vitamins

Medichecks Thyroid plus vitamins including folate (private blood draw required)

If you can get GP to test vitamins and antibodies then cheapest option for just TSH, FT4 and FT3

£29 (via NHS private service ) and 10% off if go on thyroid uk for code

Medichecks - JUST vitamin testing including folate - DIY finger prick test

Add results and ranges if you have any

Or come back with new post once you get results

Obviously results from 2018 are far too long ago and mean nothing without ranges (figures in brackets after each result)

What were you taking in 2018.....levothyroxine?

If so how much .....

You need testing now including vitamins if not been done recently

Ok thank you so much I'm sorry I'm not giving much info it's just this is what I have to hand you see. I have found on that letter it said it said

Testing has shown an elevated free T4 at 32.9pmol/L for a reference range of 8-22pmol/L. Similarly the free T3 is also elevated at 8.3pmol/L for a reference range of 3.7-6. THS has been normal as well at 3.2mU/L for a reference range of 0.3-6.

My thyroid receptor antibodies are negative.

I will ring up my doctor in the morning for a recent blood test result so I can post that. Thank you for your help I really appreciate it.

What led you to understand you have thyroid hormone resistance?

Who diagnosed RTH?

Are you prescribed T3?

Do you have any lab results , including ranges, that you can post.....it is difficult to comment without those.

Do you have any other symptoms apart from weight gain?

Depression is a symptom of hypothyroidism

Levothyroxine is a replacement hormone not a drug per se

I'm sorry you feel so desperate if you can post any results then members can make a start.

You are legally entitled to request copies of results from your surgery......

Best...

I'm sure you will get good replies on the technical issues here. On a personal note. I too am hypothiroid and struggle with weight gain from time to time. My weight can suddenly leap by half to one stone. When I was first diagnosed and prescribed Levothyroxine I thought my weight would stabilise. It never did. Taking Levothyroxine will not necessarily help you lose weight as there are many factors involved. I hope you get the advice you need. First step is to get recent bloods a full panel including vitamins D3 B12 and Ferritin. Others on here are more experienced with results but I just didn't want you to think Levothyroxine alone would solve your weight problem. Best wishes
