Hi after every meal I get a lump of mucus in throat which I have to "cough" out. It seem so be from nose rather than chest. Extremely embarrassing if I'm not at home when it happens!

Thanks for your (and everyone's reply, don't think I could live without dairy!!! ...My staple diet! I am allergic to eggs and know how an allergy feels.

Well many of us with hypothyroidism have hidden food intolerance...not the same as food allergy

Gluten intolerance is extremely common and dairy intolerance almost as common

You don’t need any obvious symptoms...though post nasal drip is common symptom for dairy intolerance

Lactose intolerance is very common with Hashimoto's

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/240...

Lactose intolerance was diagnosed in 75.9 % of the patients with HT

read.qxmd.com/read/24796930...

These findings show that lactose intolerance significantly increased the need for oral T4 in hypothyroid patients.

I think we must agree to disagree on quite a lot, but I'm grateful for your taking the time to reply. I do know the difference between allergy and intolerance as it happens and I honestly think a lot of food intolerance is imagination, but if it helps for someone to follow a peculiar diet etc. bless!

I use to think food intolerances were airy fairy imaginary issues ....until, despite ZERO gut symptoms, I was diagnosed by endoscopy as severe gluten intolerance. Not coeliac. Was astounded at the difference in my reduction in symptoms on strictly gluten free diet

The only way to know for sure is to try an elimination diet

Obviously if symptoms aren’t totally debilitating, it’s a choice between going without foods you like and less symptoms or eating what you like and putting up with ongoing symptoms

With severe gluten intolerance that luxury of choice is not available.

Hi Foxglove.

I had a terrible blocked nose overnight and a build up in my nose and throat every day. It wasn’t absolutely terrible in the scheme of life just really annoying. Now I think to myself you stupid dope why an earth did you live with it for so long 🙄. Assumed for years it was hay fever. Then after being diagnosed with Hashi’s earlier this year I started to really take notice of my terrible health. I found this incredible group and decided to get a food intolerance test done via Blue Horizon. I discovered a strong intolerance to cow’s milk, whey and casein (range of 0-5 I was 5 for whey and casein and 3 for cow’s milk). Immediately cut all dairy out (check labels it’s in everything including batter, breadcrumbs, crisps and some processed meats!) and after a few weeks it had all cleared up! I was stunned. Interestingly my hay fever has reduced to barely there levels now too!

I’d really recommend taking an intolerance test. If you find an intolerance you must 100% cut it out or it’s no good. In the same way as having a tiny bit of gluten isn’t good on a gluten free diet. Going to test the water in nine months time but I suspect it’s here for life. My next step thanks to Isabella Wentz is to check my thyroid antibodies to see if they’ve reduced. I really don’t want another autoimmune disease, god only knows this is bad enough.

I don’t think people give enough thought to intolerances (my old self included) because the damage they can cause by the constant fight it causes our bodies to go through can be life changing.

Best of luck to you and I hope whatever you try makes you feel better 😊x

I get this because of my hay fever and I actually had sneezing fit in a shop yesterday and

I had to explain what it was because everyone was backing away from me.
