Not particularly. Never has been for me in 45 years of hypothyroidism. More likely to be a lung problem, chest infection, catarrh, etc, but you haven't given much information to base an answer on.

Thanks, no chest probs. more a sort of mucus dripping from nose into throat esp. after eating. Sorry don't really know how to explain it better! Has to be removed as I feel sick if I swallow

Post nasal drip (PND) is listed as one of the signs/symptoms of hypothyroidism but you can, of course, have that without being Hypo. Look it up and see if it fits.

Sounds like postnasal drip, you’re probably eating something you’re intolerant to.

I have a lot of phlegm on rising in the morning.Lots of throat clearing needed to clear a frog in the throat.

I need to keep dairy to a minimum.Yoghurt, butter, cream a no-no.I try to stick to a small amount of cheese.

Yes, I have. I had it a few years ago with hypothyroid symptoms (didn't know I was hypo at the time) and my symptoms went away for a couple of years - and so did the PND.

Then after severe stress, the Hashi's symptoms returned... and so did the PND.

I stopped the gluten, dairy, etc. Nothing has worked, as it's linked to my thyroid.

Lactose intolerance can cause post nasal drip

Mucus is a protective device, good that you are clearing it. Are you taking anything that would cause it as a healing? Dairy can be a cause as well.

That wasn't very clear. Sometimes if you are doing some sort of detox even elsewhere in the body it will create the drainage there.

foxglove in reply toHeloise

Didn't know mucus was protective, not sure if that's the case why it's good to clear. Not doing any healing....perhaps it will remain a mystery!

The mucus that is secreted by mucous objects lies on top of the tissues to not only protect it from invaders but also to keep the underlying tissue from drying out. If the tissue becomes dry, it becomes more fragile and can cause the organ to malfunction. Each system that produces mucus also uses mucus for its own purposes.

It could be an outside irritant of some sort.

Thanks, a whole new way of understanding mucus!

There are symptoms of hypothyroidism and amongst many symptoms Asthma is just one of them.

It was my first symptom.

I had had PND since a teenager but it got much worse and then a morning cough for 18 months before I got Shingles for the second time which was a few weeks prior to diagnosis.

I had seen a GP about it, a few times the year before.

Wasnt told I’d had raised Cholesterol for a decade. Nor that my TSH was increasing. Told my bloods were normal!

I was prescribed Omeprazole.

I take Betaine, Pepsin and HCL now and Lactose and Gluten free and Thyroid supplement of course and cough went and PND much better x
