Has anyone used this to reduce mucin/water build-up under skin, did it work?
N-ACETYL CYSTEINE (NAC): Has anyone used this to... - Thyroid UK
N-ACETYL CYSTEINE (NAC)
Hi I don’t know how helpful this is but I’ve just started taking it for these reasons as I have insulin resistant PCOS as well as graves thyroid / Hashimoto thyroid.
Only just started though...
NAC is an antioxidant and amino acid that the body needs for the health of all our hormones, but especially insulin. In clinical trials, NAC showed significant improvement in pregnancy and ovulation rate for women with PCOS (1). Additionally, a study of 100 women with PCOS found that NAC treatment had a significant effect on decreasing:
● Insulin and weight loss (similar to effect of Metformin)
● Facial and body hair
● Free testosterone
● And improved ovulation (2)

I've taken it for ages. It's had no effect on my weight, or my mucin or my water retention or anything else, much. Maybe improved my breathing slightly, but that's about all.
Lots of opinions on it here:

Check especially xanderusa 's post.
You had no bad side effects from it?
I watched the video that showed the difference between regular fat and mucin filled skin.... if this is correct I’m toast!
Skin on toast? Yuck! lol No, you know what, mentioning that video has made me think. Before I started the NAC, I couldn't pinch up the skin anywhere on my body except on the backs of my hands. Now, I can do it right up to the elbows! That's got to be an improvement, hasn't it. Keep taking the tablets!
GG,
Sorry if you´ve mentioned this before, but why do you continue to take it if you don´t notice any benefits...? Curious as I am currently considering adding it to my regimen.
Well, in one of his posts, xanderusa mentions that it's going to take a long time. So, I soldier on in hope.
I feel it my duty to be honest when a question is asked, so I've said what is happening to me - see my new reply to Batty1 above - but gave a link to xanderusa's post for balance. It doesn't do any harm, so I don't see why I shouldn't take it, and I do feel there's a slight improvement in my breathing, which has to make it worthwhile.
And, do read the above mentioned post for the cofactors, if you're thinking of taking it.
