Thyriod and urticaria

I have been meaning to have my thyriod blood done private ,I believe there is a conection between hypothyriod and urticaria, although my gp says no conection as I am being treated with levothyroxine. I have seen on this site suggestions of where I can get this thyriod test done ,can anyone remind me where I can get this done ,urticaria driving me mad

Hi Alice. Sometimes the brand of levothyroxine may contain an ingredient to which you are sensitive. If you have hay fever you might have cross reactions with birch pollens nuts and other foods. Acacia and gum Arabic may be added to the tablets . Changing brands might help . Other food intolerance tests might help . Vitamin d deficiency can make you more prone to allergies as can low vitamin b. I take antihistamine loretadine every day but find cold temperatures can set me off and need a temperature of 65 degrees over night. Hope you feel better. Checking ingredients helps to locate maize wheat barley substances to which you might be sensitive too. I take a cough medicine to suppress mucus.I use Vick menthol on chest to help breathing.

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 plus both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested. Also EXTREMELY important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

Low vitamin levels are extremely common, especially if you have autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto's) diagnosed by raised Thyroid antibodies

Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and before eating or drinking anything other than water .

Last dose of Levothyroxine 24 hours prior to blood test. (taking delayed dose immediately after blood draw).

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip, best not mentioned to GP or phlebotomist)

I feel like screaming "No,no, NO! Not listening!"

I find myself with the strange situation where by the more thyroid meds I take the more my urticaria flares.

I was diagnosed with urticaria many moons ago, on one patch - on my backside, and prescribed a mild steroid cream, to be used "as required".

I didn't need it for what seemed like eons, until almost 2 years ago when it all went a bit whappy. It's not the greatest place to have a very, very itchy rash!

Looks like I might be well served by having antibodies tested again

Hi Alice, I had Graves Disease and really overactive thyroid. That’s how I knew I had it because I kept going into A&E with severe itching with urticaria. That’s how my body was telling me I was ill.

They put me on IV antihistamine and steroid and each time I went home with a course of prednisalone steroid.

The ‘episodes’ only stopped once I had my thyroid under control. (I had a total thyroidectomy in 2009) Hope that helps.

Sorry about hives!

I only had this once. It was the run up to me being diagnosed with hashimotos . Thankfully, my GP recognised the symptoms and added to my other ones, tested me.

Am now on T3. Good luck with that.

Honestly I get allsorts of makes from my chemist ,at the moment the brand is mercury
