Thyroid storm

Hi everyone. Just was wondering what a thyroid storm is

Tachycardia (> 140 heartbeats per minute)

High fever

Sweating persistently

Shaking

Agitation

Restlessness

Confusion

Diarrhoea and /or vomiting

Loss of consciousness

Graves Disease for example, causes the thyroid to overproduce hormones

(hyperthyroidism ). When it happens suddenly, you can have a thyroid storm. It can come on within hours and may require immediate hospitalization.

It is a medical emergency must go to hospital

Just to add I had one last year and survived it because it is not always fatal. I spent several hours in hospital and had various tests to make sure I wasn't having a heart attack.

Thankyou that helps. I thought I had one. I had all those symptoms but also excessive urinating. I ended up in hospital three times

To an extent it’s an exaggeration of ‘normal’ hyperthyroid symptoms, which can themselves be pretty scary, especially if you are new to all this. This link gives more info :
