Hi, my 20 year old daughter has been suffering with depression, anxiety and weight gain over the last year and she’s really starting to struggle at Uni. She’s been to see the doctor and they put her on antidepressants. They didn’t help. Both me and her Dad have thyroid issues so I got her to do a medichecks test.
I can see that her TSH is high but her antibodies aren’t so what does that mean and how do we help her to try and overcome it?
Thank you so much

Her TSH is high and her FT4 is low, but both are in-range. And, her FT3 is ok at the moment. So, although her thyroid is obviously struggling, and directing its efforts into producing more T3 than T4 to keep her afloat, there's no way she'd get any sort of diagnosis at the moment. But, that doesn't mean she should just forget her thyroid. She needs to keep on testing until something gets bad enough for a GP to recognise.
In the meantime, could she get her nutrients tested - either by GP or privately? They are probably low and adding to her symptoms. She needs vit D, vit B12, folate and ferritin tested. And, optimising her nutrients might help her struggling thyroid.
Don't think so, no. Gluten sensitivity tends to be a Hashi's thing. And, she doesn't appear to have Hash's - not that a one-off negative test proves anything, they need retesting, but it might be better to concentrate on nutrients first. If you make too many changes at once, you won't know what's helping and what isn't.
Low B12 - Low Folate - can cause low mood. When you have the results start a new post for comment. Private testing available through Thyroid UK. Don't supplement until you have the results. B12 is good around 500 - Ferritin and Folate mid-range and VitD around 100.
Thank you for the response. Yes, I have Hashimoto’s and all of her Dads family have an under active thyroid, as we’re not together anymore I’m not in a position to ask about whether it’s Hashimoto’s or not but as he, his siblings and his mother have it, I’m assuming it has to be Hashi’s. I have to admit I really expected her to show high antibodies so when I saw her results, I was quite surprised and unsure how to help. We’ll get her vitamin levels tested and hope that gives us an idea how to proceed. We’ll also keep an eye on her thyroid from now on.
