Onycholysis

Dear lovely wise people. I think I have onycholysis on most fingers and a couple of toes. Started a few months ago on the fingers & seems to be working down the nail bed. Almost to the bottom on a couple of fingers. Worried I might lose some of the nails so very interested in suggestions? I have hashi and have been chronically low in B12 and vit D. Been injecting B12 weekly for a year (with folic acid) and supplementing D and co-factors for nearly as long. I'm not taking iron though, could that be relevant? Only ever had ferritin measured 2 years ago & it was mid range. Any advice please?

Recommend getting FULL thyroid and vitamin testing to see where you are

Do you only take folic acid...not a good quality daily vitamin B complex ?

Do you supplement magnesium and vitamin K2 mk7?

See you have gut issues....Are you on strictly gluten free diet?

Onycholysis can be caused by hyperthyroidism/over-medication. Do you have Hashi's? If so, an extreme 'hyper' phase could have caused it.

I had it when I was over-medicated, but on some fingers it persisted even when I reduced my dose. I found that massaging my nails with hemp balm every night - every single night, or else it back-slides - has got rid of it completely. My nails are now normal again. But, I continue with the massages just in case! :)

Yes, I have hashi. But I'm at the dosage that my endo thought I'd end up at - and if anything is slightly under for my weight.

Your dosage doesn't really have anything to do with it, does it. If it did your onycholysis would have cleared up. As I said, mine continued for years after I was on my optimal dose. Why not just give the help balm a go and see if it helps?

After I had thyroid storm last year my ring finger nails and little finger nails started to lift off their beds they have now almost re-attached. I can always tell if my levels are off because I lose loads of hair and my nails start to lift off their beds. When I was very hyperthyroid I lost several toe nails which was very painful.
