hi, ive just been diagnosed. why do we get bloated with underactive thyroid? is this normal? i feel scared that its not?
There are many causes for bloating. Do give us more information about yourself so people are able to comment without guessing.
Dose of Levo ? Hashimotos ? Test results? Gluten Free ? Diagnosis date ? Diet ? Supplements ? Other meds ?
If your thyroid hormone levels are low the you can tend to retain water. Bloating also can occur due to low stomach acid slowing digestive processes. Although you may not be coeliac, some find that they have a gluten intolerance which causes bloating. Going gluten free can help.
Hypothyroidism can lead to low intracellular magnesium levels which causes smooth muscle (as in gut) to contract and give a sensation of bloating. Sort out your hypothyroidism and take a magnesium supplement.
Its really common. I put on 20kgs and Shingles and my toenails droped off before I insisted on more tests and was diagnosed and told on a routine telephone appt. Such a shock! The cells in your body cant expel the water as everything slows down. I have lost a lot of the gained weight since going on medication a year ago. This site will explain anything if you have any questions, we’re all in the same boat x
That’s awful. I got shingles which was horrible and my nails are very deformed but never actually fell out. Mind you I wish a couple would - they grow like sausages and rub on shoes. I have to cut them with pliers and dread it every time. I heard garden secateurs are good but not tried them...yet. This disorder is a bit of a pain, to put it mildly.
Bloating is a major concern of mine. My doctor suggested doing the fodmap diet which I’m on at the moment. Fourth week and maybe a slight improvement.
Make sure your thyroid levels and all four vitamins are optimal
Frequently that means getting full testing privately
If you have Hashimoto’s then strictly gluten free diet helps or is essential for high percentage of patients
Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and before eating or drinking anything other than water .
Last dose of Levothyroxine 24 hours prior to blood test. (taking delayed dose immediately after blood draw).
This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip, best not mentioned to GP or phlebotomist)
Is this how you do your tests?
Private tests are available. Thousands on here forced to do this as NHS often refuses to test FT3 or antibodies

For thyroid including antibodies and vitamins
Medichecks Thyroid plus ultra vitamin or Blue Horizon Thyroid plus eleven are the most popular choice. DIY finger prick test or option to pay extra for private blood draw. Both companies often have special offers, Medichecks usually have offers on Thursdays, Blue Horizon its more random
Whenever I get hypo I always get bloated, and also have indigestion.
It’s a pretty common symptom, try not to get alarmed about it. It should resolve once you are properly medicated, but this may take a while to achieve.
