I have Hashimotos & (mild) TED. My eye dryness, grittiness & pain seem to have subsided (thankfully) but I’m waking up again with very swollen upper eyelids. I think I’ve read someone refer to them as ‘marshmallow eyes’- the swelling does look like a marshmallow!
My recent thyroid levels are much better & recent vitamins optimal (except ferritin, which I’m now supplementing for). The only change I’ve made since Christmas is reintroducing dairy, as I was finding this restrictive on my pescatarian diet. I am gluten free and eat lots of anti inflammatory foods. Has anyone had success eliminating nightshades? I do like tomatoes, but will try anything to reduce the eyelid swelling. I’m going to try eliminate dairy again & see if this helps (I tried dairy free for 3 months previously- I didn’t really see noticeable benefits). My Endo prescribed furosemide to help reduce the swelling, but I’d prefer to do this naturally if I can.
Please let me know if anyone else has lid swelling in the morning & what has helped. All suggestions welcome!

Good morning I’m also lactose / gluten free.if you find you really do struggle you can buy lactose enzyme tablets from Amazon have a google it will explain better than I can.xx
Thanks for the reply BadHare. My eyes aren’t dry anymore thanks to lutein & zeazanthin, black seed oil & HycoSan drops. It’s the swelling on my upper lid/ towards bridge of my nose that I’m trying to address.
Sleeping with teabags or cucumber slices wouldn’t be comfortable, though you could try that before bed. 😳
Maybe try putting a folded warm facecloth over your eyelids tonight just before bed it can be very soothing if it helps then you could buy one of those little gel eyeshades that you heat in water before use, don’t buy the microwave ones if you can avoid as they have a nasty habit of bursting when you least expect it.good luck.x
Thanks Thrones. I did actually buy one of those last year but didn’t use as ophthalmologist said it wouldn’t do much as I don’t have blepharitis. Worth a try though! 👍
He’s talking rubbish think back to when we were young and we got styes, warm face cloth ,actually a hot one to try burst the sty , that was the big standard treatment ( (and your mums gold wedding ring rubbed on eye lol) it’s very soothing regardless of blepharitis which I do have and use a really good gel for.it can only help you.
Thanks! I do remember my mum suggesting the wedding ring treatment! 🤣 I will try the eye pack....I’ve just located it. The one I have has an inner part that you put in hot water for a few minutes, then it goes in a sleeve. I’m sure that will help soothe.....but I’m still in search of something to prevent the swelling in the first place. 🤞
I have TED now in recovery phase. Occasionally I still have the swelling you describe. Although VERY wary of using any products around my eye area I have discovered that Boots No 7 overnight eye balm helps.
Thanks Asiatic, I will look into this product. How long were you in the active phase of TED? My eyes are much more aligned now, with no pain, just left with light sensitivity (I wear reactive glasses) and the eyelid swelling mentioned in my post.
2 years in active phase. Eyes so much better now although still need prism to correct double vision and also very light sensitive and colour vision is affected. All this I can live with although I do miss not being able to drive.
