A&E ,palpatations and tight chest, high bp. Could thyroid be under treated and have these symptoms?

I have been to a&e tonight. I had palpitations and felt awful. I have had it on and off for 3 weeks but tonight was worst. Lasted couple of hours. Pulse up to 130 sat down and no 145/95. I had to leave work early (work nights). I have also had swelling around my eyes for past 4 weeks but it is not infection.

In Nov my levo was reduced. I had been feeling ok but they said it needed reducing. I was hoping to make it to my next app with endo consultant next month so he could review it. I feel like i did b4 i was dignosed tbh. I got palpatations then too.

They did ecg and bloods in a&e tonight and all normal.

Is it possible that my hypo is undertreated? It still confuses me that it could cause palpitations from this when it is associated with overactive thyroid usually. I think it is 50% paplatations snd 50% me then panicking about them. It is not a panic attack though I would understand a professional thinking it is.

I'm wondering whether to stick it out or to just up my dose on my own until I see the consultant again in 4 weeks. He wasreluctant yo do anything as they had onky just alterered my dose. He said looking attbe results he would not necessarily reduced my levo looking at them. He is open to trying t3 which is why I asked for referral. I had my bloods rechecked on 7th jan but for some weird reason they still aren't back.

I'm so bloody fed up. I can't afford to miss work

Is t3 the answer?

Palpitations can be a symptom of both under and overactive thyroid.

Do you have your most recent test results, with reference ranges, that you can post? No-one can tell you whether T3 is the answer without seeing your results for TSH, FT4 and FT3, and also optimal nutrient levels are needed for thyroid hormone to work properly, and before adding T3, so you also need Vit D, B12, Folate and Ferritin testing.

I am trying to get them from the gp. Done on 7th but I have asked twice Now and told they aren't back. It is normally back in couple of days. I have gp app tomorrow. Hopefully get them then.

Will gp even do vit d, b12, folate and ferritin?

I'm so fed up of not understanding all this.

I am even more upset now as I rang work to explain about my thyroxine being changed in Nov and it probably being the cause of all this and my boss said : "oh, (pause) I usually get and instant hit from it" (meaning the medication miraculously works straight away for her and doubting that in me, and everyone else in the world, it takes 6-8 weeks to build up in your system.)

So she is basically calling me a liar. I wouldn't mind but she is a nurse too.

Results from 7th ( which I think are already out of date) are

Serum T4 15.1

Serum tsh 0.23

Sat waiting for more bloods as I type.

We need the reference ranges, as mentioned before, in order to be able to interpret your results. Without them we haven't a clue as to where your FT4 lies within it's range. We know that your TSH is low, maybe even below range, because TSH ranges are very similar, but other ranges vary quite a lot.

Serum t4 ref (7.5-21.1)

Serum tsh ref (0.34-5.6)

Serum tsh 0.23

(0.34-5.6)

Below range which normally indicates adequate thyroid hormone replacement.

Serum T4 15.1 (7.5-21.1)

55.88% through range which indicates that there is room for an increase in Levo.

Perhaps wait and see what other tests have been done and their results.

Hi there, this happened to my mum after the flu, she is hypothyroid , but apparently had a thyroid storm which give her terrible anxiety and was admitted to hospital for fast heart rate. She actually nearly had a mental breakdown and was put on depression meds , but it was all down to her thyroid and not one person in the hospital realised this, it was only when she got out a very senior GP realised what happened and fixed her medication. Thankfully she is now ok, but it was very frightening to see her so unwell. i find it so shocking that doctors have no idea how thyroid can affect everything and a bad dose of the flu can really swing your meds so look after yourself.

Are you sure she had a thyroid storm? The reason I ask is because it is usually people who have hyperthyroid which is an over-active thyroid who suffer with those. I have Graves' disease and I had a thyroid storm last year and was admitted to hospital. I am fine now and you can read my story on my profile page.

That is what her GP said, she was only ever told she was hypothyroid , but she had the most awful flu for two weeks , she even had the flu injection and it was after the flu that she got the palpitations and was admitted to hospital. It was when she actually came out of hospital that she started to get these strange hot sensations over her body and had terrible panic attacks with them I got her CBD oil which helped, but it was only getting her thyroid stabilised that sorted it out. I will read your profile thank you

A couple of almost instant things you could try, which might help - but there are never any guarantees...

Get hold of some magnesium citrate pills or powder - you can buy both of these from Holland & Barrett in an emergency, although usually I wouldn't recommend them.

You'll have many more choices elsewhere if you buy online - and you'll probably save money online too, but if you want something today then it has to be H&B or any other supplement shops you have in your area.

Buy the powder if you can, in preference to the pills which are huge and difficult to swallow.

Do NOT buy magnesium oxide or any magnesium product which doesn't specify what it is.

Don't exceed the dose given on the packaging.

I forgot to mention that taking magnesium is not safe if you have chronic severe kidney disease. The kidneys dispose of excess magnesium in the body, but if your kidneys are unhealthy magnesium might build up in your body.

...

Another thing to try is potassium supplements - you can also get these in H&B. But again I'd suggest looking online in future for more choice and the chance of better deals :

Don't exceed the dose on the packaging.

...

Do you eat a low salt diet? If you do then you might actually have too low a level of sodium and that can cause heart rhythm problems and palpitations too. When I want to take some salt I use this product which contains plenty of salt :

tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/p...

Alternatively you could stick quarter of a teaspoon of salt in a glass of water and just drink it. Not so nice as the stock but will still do the job if low sodium is an issue for you.

Just use a teaspoon of the stuff in a mug of boiling water and drink it.

...

If you are going to get a benefit from any of these things it should happen within about 10 minutes. Ditto for the other things I've mentioned in this reply.

Try magnesium first. If it doesn't solve your problem try the potassium 10 minutes later. If that doesn't solve your problem, then try the vegetable stock 10 minutes after that. If at any point something causes you a problem or your problem goes away then just stop and don't try any later steps.

What are these supplements treating though? What do you think has gone wrong, and what will these do to help?

Magnesium is an essential micronutrient that everyone needs. Unfortunately, the amount of magnesium in soil and hence foods grown in those soils has dropped dramatically in the last 50 - 70 years and lots of people all around the world are deficient.

articles.mercola.com/sites/...

Unfortunately there is no such thing as a good magnesium test so it isn't worth testing. As long as your kidneys are healthy enough they will excrete excess magnesium if you should ever take too much. So most people on this forum who take magnesium don't bother testing.

As for potassium and sodium I'm not up to saying much about that - my biochemistry knowledge isn't up to the job. If taking potassium supplements concerns you then try eating a banana and drinking a glass of coconut water. They both contain potassium.

As for sodium / salt, well that is only likely to be of relevance to someone on a low salt diet who may have pushed their level too low.

Look up the effects of deficiency in magnesium, potassium and sodium on the heart. You might find symptoms that you have in common.

As long as you don't exceed any of the dosages I've suggested or is given on the packaging then the chances of you being harmed in any way by a dose of magnesium, potassium and/or sodium are miniscule.

Anther possibility that can cause palpitations and heart rhythm problems is low iron or low ferritin (iron stores). However, there is no instant cure for this. Iron levels must be tested before considering supplementing. Excessive iron is poisonous.

Low vitamin levels are extremely common when dose is reduced

Get vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 tested by GP plus FULL thyroid testing FT4 AND Ft3

I will ask. Unfortunately don't expect much from previous experience with the GP.

When I feel this way all the fight is gone.

I recently (2 weeks ago) started to eat gluten again as I felt it was not making any difference after 4 months +. Could any of this be connected. My symptoms are:

Tiredness

Foggy brain/difficulty concentrating

Lightheadedness

Headaches

Swelling around my eyes

Tinnitus

Palpatations

Hi I have those symptoms. Few trips to A &E Waiting for heart monitor for 24 hours although A&E doc suggested 48. This was weeks ago but symptoms calmed down so not bothered chasing it.

They are starting up again. What medication are you on? I'm wondering if it's those. As given wockhart 25mg. Talking to my chiropractor and his wife had problems with these made her anxious and gave her palps. So she stoped them. Back on almus and all is ok now. Sometimes wonder if it make for either it's just a bad batch.

Not what you're looking for?
