I took Propylthiouracil for years after Carbimazole made me come up in a rash and almost paralysed me. I couldn't even walk. I was fine on Propylthiouacil and had no problems. Hope you will be the same.

Hi. I was on Carbimazole for about two weeks (three years ago) and my joints (knees, fingers) started to get swollen and I started to feel severe muscle cramps when doing minimum movements.

I realized the Carbimazole was the problem and I stopped it. After that, I was kind of paralysed two weeks (because the minimum movement caused to me those horrendous cramps). I started to feel better and better after those two weeks.

Because my hyperthyroidism was mild, I left it untreated (I got used to the tremors), but after having a severe weight loss these days, the doctor gave me Propylthiouracil instead today.

This from 1953:

PROPYLTHIOURACIL AND METHIMAZOLE

A CLINICAL comparison of propylthiouracil (used on fifty-four patients) and methimazole (forty-five patients) in the management of hyperthyroidism was carried out by Irwin and Norris (Journal of the American Medical Association, 1952.149.1637-40). Daily dosages were —Propylthiouracil; small goitres, 300 mgm.; moderate goitres, 400-500 mgm.; large goitres, 600-800 mgm:, methimazole; small, 15 mgm., moderate, 30-45 mgm.; large, 60 mgm. Methimazole controlled the symptoms in about 40 per cent. of the time taken by propylthiouracil, nine of the patients receiving which did not respond satisfactorily. In five cases treatment was discontinued because of slow response, and in the remaining four control was reached only after prolonged treatment. Serious side-effects such as agranulocytosis and fever were equal in the two groups, but skin rash was more prevalent with the methimazole group. If methimazole is used it should be under close clinical observation.

Carbimazole converts to methimazole in the body.

Thank you , I’m trying to b brave and not think that it will do the same , but I’m constant checking and waiting for the sore throat daily and it’s making me anxious , but I have just got to go day by day and if it happens then I shall have to deal with it like when I was on Carbimazole ,
