Acid Reflux

Hello Everyone

Wondering if anyone can help. I need something for extremely bad acid reflux. I don't want it to affect the medication that I take for my under active thyroid. Spent most of yesterday with extremely bad pains and tightness at the top of my chest. (this has been checked out its not my heart). I have a problem due to the thyroid with swallowing and feel food is not going down or being digested properly.

Thank you in advance

I used to take Ranitidine which my Doctor prescribed me for oesophagitis but I think there is a recall on it. Have you tried Gaviscon?

It depends what is causing your acid reflux. Do you have high stomach acid, or low stomach acid? The symptoms are the same.

Read the article below and try the home test at the end:

Avoid taking acid reducing medicine around the time you take levothyroxine, it can reduce absorption. Hypothyroidism is a cause of acid reflux so make sue you are adequately treated.

Magnesium based antacids such as magnesium hydroxide are gentler but I'm not sure they sell them now, ask your pharmacist.

Thank you all for your replies and advice I am going to my doctor today to have a chat after spending most of yesterday in A and E with severe chest pains which turned out to be acid reflux I was told.

Many thanks to you all

Be warned: doctors do not 'believe in' low stomach acid, and he will probably want you to take PPI's. PPI's should be a last resort, and will not help if you do have low stomach acid, because they lower acid even further.

You need a gastroscopy and biopsies to see what is going on .I had severe pressure on my chest and was told acid was the problem .But what caused the acid? The first gastroscopy showed stomach ulcers ,Barratts oesophagus and hiatus hernia . A second gastroscopy with biopsies sent elsewhere ,as the ulcers were larger, revealed high grade non Hodgkins Lymphoma in my stomach. A very unusual lymphoma from which I am now recovering after 6 chemo sessions.

Hopefully, you will not be in a similar position but it needs checking. PPIs completely removed the symptoms I had and thus disguised the real cause.

As per my reply to your previous post

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 plus both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested. Also EXTREMELY important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

Low vitamin levels are extremely common, especially if you have autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto's) diagnosed by raised Thyroid antibodies

Bloods should be retested 6-8 weeks after each dose increase in Levothyroxine

Have you had full testing yet?

Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and before eating or drinking anything other than water .

Last dose of Levothyroxine 24 hours prior to blood test. (taking delayed dose immediately after blood draw).

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip, best not mentioned to GP or phlebotomist)

Private tests are available. Thousands on here forced to do this as NHS often refuses to test FT3 or antibodies or all vitamins

Cheapest option for just TSH, FT4 and FT3 £29 (via NHS private service )

For thyroid including antibodies and vitamins

Medichecks Thyroid plus ultra vitamin or Blue Horizon Thyroid plus eleven are the most popular choice. DIY finger prick test or option to pay extra for private blood draw. Both companies often have special offers, Medichecks usually have offers on Thursdays, Blue Horizon its more random

Low stomach acid can be a common problem....but most GP's assume it's high acid

Thousands of posts on here about low stomach acid

I juice a glassful of celery juice most mornings and drink it on an empty stomach. Not a jug full that many propose on the internet.

Most mornings I wake to some acid but since I have been doing this my daytime acid has been massively better controlled. I always take a slippery elm capsule before bed which enables me to sleep. I am always propped up with pillows and never now sleep on my right hand side.

Adopting these practices has helped me without huge amounts of potentially dangerous drugs.

And personally I have seen a link between consumption of wheat containing products and worse acid. I am currently experimenting with gluten free and low wheat consumption.

Sugar is the same.

High histamine and the inability to clear it is another cause of high stomach acid which also causes acid reflux. Dr Ben Lynch explains here:

Some people are constantly clearing their throat because of acid reflux caused by high histamine. So yes low stomach acid isn’t always the reason .
