DIO2 Polymorphism, where do I go from here?

I had my results and I have heterozygous genotype variant rs225014. Can I take this to my GP? Will she understand or care? Should I ask for a referral to endocrinology? Do NHS endos accept the advice? Do I need to go private? All the questions!

GP unlikely to know anything about DIO2.

Only a few endocrinologists are aware of its significance.

Email Dionne at Thyroid Uk for list of recommended thyroid specialist endocrinologists who will prescribe T3. It may need to be a private consultation....depends where you are.

Roughly where in the UK are you?

I'm in Essex. My partner is in Gloucestershire so if I was going private we might look more that way

I made an appointment with my GP. I took a copy of the report with me. He scanned it and put it in my NHS File. I sent a copy to my private Endocrinologist. I also took a copy with me to my NHS Endocrinologist appointment.

What was so reassuring for me was now I knew what was wrong and why it was wrong. T3 medication needed!!!

I now have had T3 medication prescribed by the NHS as well as privately. Taking the T3 meds has made a huge difference to my life.

The only Drs that can prescribe Liothyronine T3 are Endocrinologists and psychiatric Drs. Lack of T3 can also cause mental illness.

If you have siblings they may have the gene fault also. But not all do. My sister has had thyroid cancer but does not have the gene fault.

I was given a trial of t3 on the nhs after a private consultation with an endocrinologist who reluctantly agreed to let me try it many years ago. My brilliant gp just kept on adding it to my prescription because I felt so much better on it. When, a couple of years ago, the ccgs were telling gps to stop prescribing it, I paid for the DIO2 test and had a positive result. My gp used this, in consultation with the endocrinologist at the local hospital, to ensure I could continue on it.

I hope you get a positive result with your gps help.

Thank you for your experiences. My GP has agreed to refer me to an endo of my choice on the basis of the test, she's been amazing so far, now I just need to try and select a forward thinking endo 🀞🏻🀞🏻🀞🏻
