The head of the import and export department at Sriprasit Pharma writes in reply to my email of December 9:
"Thank you for your mail.
It has been necessary that we change the source of thyroid extract used in our manufacture of Thyroid-S.
We have found a new source. However its price is far more costly than that of the former one. We would have no other choice but to bring in the raw material from this new source.
Resulting from the substantial increase of the production cost, we will have to adjust the selling price of Thyroid-S very significantly. However, the new price has not yet been determined.
Furthermore, we will do Thyroid-S, using the new source of thyroid extract, in bottles of 500 tablets only. The bottles of 1,000 tablets will no longer be available.
We cannot yet confirm when the new production of Thyroid-S in 500 tablets will be available. We estimate that they will be ready in March 2020.
We are optimistic that Thyroid-S will be available continuously. Please do no worry.
Thank you for your continued support for Thyroid-S, we look forward to hearing from you."
Thanks for the information. Worrying to say the least. They will price me out of the market and then what? GP will prescribe Levo on which I was really ill, but no skin off his nose.
I suspect this is a fall out from the African Swine Fever that has virtually wiped out the pigs in China. Odd to think a bug in China can have the ability to make me ill....
I just found out my regular supplier of Thyroid-s has raised the price from 137€ for 1000 pills to 270€...I am seriously considering giving Armour a try as Thai NDT is now almost as expensive...
The price increase is a concern, but comparing it to Armour...there isn't much difference. My concern is the change in raw product supplier. NP thyroid has had a change in raw product supplier this year and now seems not as effective. My husband was doing great on NP until the change...now has switch to Armour. I am taking Thyroid S because my Dr. will not prescribe NDT. It all is very upsetting.
Thanks for this info. I have recently started Thyroid-S and find it suits so I was most upset to find it might no longer be available I have order a repeat but don't know how reliable source is and was pricey!!!
Unfortunately, I don't think anyone knows at this point how much the price will go up...only that it already has and will continue to do so...! Sure, it may not end up as expensive as Armour and other prescription brands, but the fact that two out of three brands of Thai NDT have been discontinued does not bode well...the manufacturer of the only remaining Thai brand would be stupid NOT to increase the price given the sudden increase in demand...!
I agree, the "new raw material supplier" could be problematic as we know that, in the past, prescription brands of NDT have worked less well after the mfg switched raw material suppliers...on the other hand, Armour worked well for decades, as did Naturethroid (not sure how long NP and WP have been around), so not sure why all those problems have appeared in the past or so decade...
Let's all remain vigilant, and report all changes to Thyroid-S here, just like people did when Armour was reformulated back in 2008/09...loss of efficacy, return of hypo symptoms, necessity to increase doses etc.
Sorry, do you mean reformulated Armour? Because I wasn’t aware Thyroid-S had been refirmulated?
Why is this happening? Have the big pharmaceuticals got wind that we are buying NDT from abroad? I worked in a hospital pharmacy for a few years and drug reps would fall over themselves to get Doctors and Pharmacists to buy their new drugs. It is different now but I have been wined and dined and Doctors have been taken on a cruises to get them to use certain drugs. I honestly think this still goes on but they have hushed it up. If I was a billionaire I would start my own company which manufacturers NDT but this would not be allowed because of the NHS and big Pharma ... never mind I can always dream that things will change for us.
I'm at a loss for words. This is so upsetting, I am laughing! It looks like after my current bottle of Thyroid-S runs out, I will have to switch to Armour, and this is after 4 years of leap frogging from one NDT brand to another.
I started taking Thyroid-S over 6 weeks ago. I will be getting my full thyroid panel lab results this week, but I don't have to see them to know that I am optimal again. Yes, I felt strange the first two weeks of taking Thyroid-S, but I gradually started feeling better. I may still get brain fog towards the end of each day, but overall my mood and well-being have greatly improved.
Thanks for the update though. I will have to follow this forum closely to see if prices for Thyroid-S will drop back down.
Thyroid-s will be available again in March according to manufacturer. It will be more expensive in the future but still manufactured and most likely less expensive than Armour etc. Glad to hear you are feeling better on it😊
I did the math and the new cost of Thyroid-S comes out to be exactly the same as a monthly supply of Armour, in USD. I am not looking to switch unless there is another price increase for Thyroid-S by the time I am through with this bottle.
I paid £59 for a 1000 tablets last year so the price has gone up. I am not using it at the moment and wish I had put them in the freezer just incase I needed to again.
