As my last thyroid tests were going into overmedicated and because I had an ECG with suspected atrial fibrillation.

Doctor dropped my dose to 75mgs one day and 100 mgs in between. The strange thing is, you would think I would have less energy and feel a bit cooler. In fact the opposite. More energy today than when my TSH was 0.07 and feeling very hot. Do you think with less dose my own thyroid is kicking in. As this seems the opposite of what I had imagined a lesser dose would make me feel.

I have read somewhere that you can get to a point where at a certain level your body becomes worse at converting. Others may confirm this. Maybe your body had reached that level and by dropping the dose your actually converting into more Ft3.

Yes, when the FT4 gets to a certain level - and that level is different for different people - it starts converting to more rT3 than T3, as a safety valve. So, your FT3 drops. Lower the FT4, conversion improves and the FT3 level rises slightly.

But I very much doubt your thyroid would ever 'kick in' again unless you stopped the levo completely. It's function won't have improved while you've been taking levo, and could even have deteriorated even further.

Could I jump in on this post please and ask then if my endo has just told me my t3 is over range and to drop my levo 125mcg to bring it down this might not do it ?

greygoose profile image
greygoose in reply toTrinav

Why do you think it might not do it? Depends on the level of your FT4.

Mid range I think I've requested copies of results in October but am still waiting and next appointment is in 8 weeks . Have no idea of rt3 if any but do they test for it?

There is a test for rT3 but the NHS don't do it because it's very expensive and doesn't give you any useful information.

If your FT4 is only mid-range, you probably won't have high rT3, anyway. But, if it is only mid-range, I don't understand how your FT3 can be over-range. Can you post all your results and ranges, and let's have a look? :)

Can you not ring the endo's secretary and ask for the results and the ranges. If you live in the UK, it is your legal right to have a print-out.

I will try that and re send the email the consultant sent asking her to do so ! Thank you

Your doctor wants to reduce your Levo by 125mcg? Or down to 125mcg? What is or was your previous dose?

Trinav profile image
Trinav in reply tohumanbean

I'm on 175 wants me down to 50 I'm sure with a view to getting t3 down was talking about trial of t3 but I couldn't have it as t3 over range 🤔

Your doctor is insane! You can't reduce dose by 70% and expect a hypothyroid patient to stay well.

You should write a post of your own though. At the moment this is impinging on the OP's questions, which isn't fair on her.

Thank you I'd better not ask anymore I'll find out some background info1st ! Thanks for your time

My TSH is usually about 0.02 and I have AF but my cardiologist doesn’t see that as a problem.

I suppose it depends on the T4 and T3. Also I have been having trouble sleeping and not being able to fall asleep. Also overheating all the time and anxious. Having to turn off heating when everyone else was cold. So doctor took the decision. I suppose if your cardiologistis ok about it, it is obviously ok for you.

How are your levels of B12 - Folate - Ferritin & VitD ? You are only over-medicated when FT3 is over range - mostly ...

My Vitamin B12 were tested and within range and vitamin D ok and ferritin also.

The range for B12 is BIG. Was your result over 500 ? What was the OK result for VitD and Ferritin ?

VitD is good around 100 + - Ferritin and Folate are good mid-range. If all low they can contribute to cardio issues ...

Being overmedicated can cause fatigue just as much as being undermedicated, particularly too much T4 as it can prevent the T3 getting through. If it's what you need, a dose decrease can give you that "dose increase feeling", because it is effectively increasing the energy inside your cells :)

Been on new regime for 3 weeks now and I feel hypothyroid again. The palpitations I felt on 100 mgs and TSH 0.02 is nothing to how bad I feel after going lower. Started to feel weepy and depressed, achy and constant weight on my head type headache. Last two days have felt better as have gone back to 100 mgs both days. On 75 I could actually feel my body start to labour and feel low mood. I would rather feel the other way than like this.
