First gp appointment today

Hi, been feeling awful for a while ( dizziness, low moods, joint pain, extreme tiredness, dry eyes etc etc!) & got bloods done. Results are my TSH is 6. I have a family history of thyroid problems( mother & maternal aunt) & I had post partum thyroiditis 16 years ago which settled with no meds.

The lab which did the test recommends that I be tested again in 6 months but I’m at breaking point here. So I’m seeing my GP this afternoon. What can I say to get her to take me seriously & not be told to come back in 3 or 6 months time?

I feel like I’ve woken up in a nightmare tbh. And I just don’t feel like me, if I’m not sleeping, I’m crying.

GPs seem to want folk to be ill until TSH is over 10!

Try to persuade the GP for a trial for 6 months with a retest in 6-8 weeks .

Be aware that a small levo amount ( which is normally prescribed) may make you worse in the short term.

Hi Herkeysmum21,

Make sure you tell GP all your symptoms and family history. If you get no joy with prescription, ask for a referral to an endocrinologist.

Do post and let us know how you get on!

Ask GP to test thyroid antibodies and vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

If your thyroid antibodies are raised this confirms cause is autoimmune thyroid disease also called Hashimoto's and guidelines recommend if TSH is above range and you have symptoms then Levothyroxine should be started

Private tests are available. Thousands on here forced to do this as NHS often refuses to test FT3 or antibodies or all vitamins

Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and before eating or drinking anything other than water .

This gives highest TSH

For thyroid including antibodies and vitamins

Medichecks Thyroid plus ultra vitamin or Blue Horizon Thyroid plus eleven are the most popular choice. DIY finger prick test or option to pay extra for private blood draw. Both companies often have special offers, Medichecks usually have offers on Thursdays, Blue Horizon its more random

Well, as I feared my gp says there’s no way my thyroid is causing my symptoms. I explained my family history etc. She’s convinced I have a “ particularly nasty virus” even tho I’ve had no cough, cold, tummy upset, fever, earache or sore throat. She’s given me prochlorperazine for the dizziness but I’ve just read up on the common side effects & they include...wait for it....tiredness and dizziness- which is what sent me for the blood tests in the first place so I think I’m not going to take it. So I have to wait it out I suppose. I got a bit teary in the consulting room which she was itchIng to put down to my being depressed. I’m not! I’m just so fed up feeling like I’ve woken up in somebody else’s body.

Tbh I hope she’s right tho.

I would certainly make a point that the prescription she gave you for dizziness causes dizziness so why has she suggested it. At least for a few moments she may experience panic!
