Endocrinologist Appointment Advice

I have booked an appointment with an Endocrinologist because I cannot face the battle with my GP to be referred. Therefore I would really appreciate some advice on how to get the most out of my appointment on 18th November. I had a full set of bloods taken by my GP in June and a follow up thyroid and hormone test done in October. I also had a Medichecks full thyroid test done in August.

Are these results sufficient for the Endocrinologist to use or will he insist on redoing them? My concern is that the ones done in June are not recent enough.

Many thanks

Your October thyroid readings will be sufficient ltimmsie1 if these include TSH, FT3 and FT4. If you haven’t had all tested since June, then I personally would repeat these. You don’t need to repeat any antibody tests if you have already got these. It invariably costs much more to retest levels at a private hospital than doing the finger print draw at home.

Also write a list of notes/ questions to discuss at your appointment and consider taking someone with you as a note taker (as some members find this useful, especially in initial appointments).

My surgery don't do full thyroid blood tests. To get my T3 reading I had to go to Medichecks and pay £89 . I'm doubtful that the Endocrinologist will accept the results of this test though because it's not NHS and they were completed in August.I'm contacting my GP surgery later today to request a retest of the blood tests that they do offer that will be relevant for my Endocrinologist appointment. Frustratingly I have to make an appointment to speak to the GP first to request these.

Many GP surgeries unfortunately can’t access full thyroid blood tests.

My private endocrinologist (like most others) accepts private blood test results. Perhaps send a message to your endo to confirm this.

can you add most recent Oct results

And Medichecks results too from August

If tested BOTH antibodies and positive/high you don’t need to retest ….though it can be helpful/informative to test after significant changes….like GF or Dairy Free

What vitamin supplements are you taking

Recommended that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am, only drink water between waking and test and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or all relevant vitamins

Post all about what time of day to test

healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...

Testing options and includes money off codes for private testing

Medichecks Thyroid plus BOTH TPO and TG antibodies and vitamins

medichecks.com/products/adv...

Blue Horizon Thyroid Premium Gold includes BOTH TPO and TG antibodies, cortisol and vitamins

bluehorizonbloodtests.co.uk...

Medichecks and BH also offer private blood draw at clinic near you, or private nurse to your own home…..for an extra fee

Only do private testing early Monday or Tuesday morning.

If you need to get repeat tests, I suggest Monitor My Health. They're done by an NHS lab at Exeter hospital. NHS GPs and endos are more likely to accept these.

They're also a good price. And 10% discount with the code THYOIDUK10

Thank you so much for this. I've just purchased the thyroid test from Monitor My Health so that I will have my T3 results to show the Endocrinologist.

Would he be interested in any other blood test results? I had almost a full set done in June (FBC, electrolytes, vit d, hbA1c) and androgen and oestrogen done in October.

You need test results for

TSH, Ft4 and Ft3

Test TPO and TG thyroid antibodies at least once

Vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 tested too

Others that are of interest

HBA1C - as is often higher when hypo

Kidney function test if been done, as also affected when hypo

Cholesterol also

TPO and TG were tested when I was diagnosed with Hashimotos 18 years ago and in August with Medichecks. I'm guessing the endo will have access to my medical records? When I made the appointment I gave them details of my GP and surgery.

Am I able to request the other tests from my GP?

I would take copies of all blood results with you and not rely on services being ‘joined up’… this has certainly happened to me in the past!
