Is this honest seller info...?

On the website of one of the (one reputable) suppliers of Thai NDT, the following info can be found:

"Due to the African Swine Fever epidemic, production of Thiroyd and T.R. have been discontinued until further notice. When our existing inventory is gone, it's gone."

If this were true, why only Thiroyd and T.R., and not Thyroid-S...I doubt this is true as I know T.R. has been discontinued and rumour has it Thiroyd has been, too, but I am worried about sellers who post this kind of info...this makes it sound like it was somehow unsafe to take Thai NDT, which is far from the truth...

Knowing what has happened - T.R. was discontinued and apparently Thiroyd as well - I believe this info to be dishonest. If the problem was swine fever, it should affect the availability of Thyroid-S as well...along with other brands of NDT.

No wonder Thyroid-S has doubled in price in recent months....it's the only Thai brand left, people will have no choice but to pay (and it's still cheaper than prescription NDT).

Could be that with three companies seeing serious price rises, and reduced supply of decissated thyroid powder, two decided they could no longer profit adequately?

With just one company (even if they have to make more tablets due to disappearing competitor products), there is just one bidder for the desiccated thyroid powder that is available. Not bidding against others and causing the price to shoot up.

I have not been able to find any info on why T.R. was discontinued, but when it comes to Thiroyd there were rumours Thai authorities were requesting NDT to be licensed, and that would involve a costly procedure. That was said to be the reason Greater Pharma stopped producing Thiroyd. But I don't know if it's true.

Let's hope Thyroid-S will not be discontinued as well as many people depend on it!

I’ve also read China has Swine fever so to me it makes sense there is a shortage. I presume many pigs have had to be slaughtered and burnt if that is the case and I presume lots of sterilisation but how long it would take to catch up I’ve no idea, I would imagine it depends on how much pork is needed first and foremost.

Seems the illness issue is very severe:

Quarter of world's pig population 'to die of African swine fever'

World Organisation for Animal Health warns spread of disease has inflamed worldwide crisis

About a quarter of the global pig population is expected to die as a result of the African swine fever (ASF) epidemic, according to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).

Global pork prices are rising spurred by growing demand from China, where as many as 100 million pigs have died since ASF broke out there last year. In recent months, China has been granting export approval to foreign meat plants and signing deals around the world at a dizzying rate. US pork sales to China have doubled, while European pork prices have now reached a six-year high.

It is a very worrying disease for pig producers all around the world but China has been particularly badly affected because of it's traditional reliance on pork meat.

DEFRA's advice

this comment may be why the company's are citing problems

'It’s illegal to trade in pork or wild boar meat from ASF-affected areas.'

Yes in China I have heard that the pigs have been severely hit by the swine flu germ but the meat is still safe to eat. On the other hand I am not sure if other vital parts for medical purposes thyroids are still ok. Perhaps China being one of the main exporters medical resource does not want to take any risks.
