Hi I have my appointment with the surgeon tomorrow and just wondered what to expect/ask.
I have been referred by my endo as he asked me if I wanted surgery or RAI, even though he was trying to push me towards RAI i eel that surgery might be best.
Just wondered what sort of questions I should ask.
A very difficult question to answer. Surgery will eliminate the majority of the thyroid gland but the surgeon will not be able to remove every last little bit of it safely. In my case I had fear that the remaining bits would start growing again and causing more problems, so I then had RAI. I had no choice about having surgery as RAI alone would not have solved my problems.
If it is inevitable that you will have to have RAI eventually and you are not being particularly inconvenienced by your existing condition (ie inability to breathe) there seems to ne point in having the surgery. Whichever you opt for you will end up with athyreosis, not simple primary hypothyroidism. You are then, almost certainly, destined to remain ill for the rest of your life on levothyroxine alone. NDT is a far better solution, T3/T4 is likely to be ineffective.
