Allergic reaction to thyroid meds

My daughter has tried np and levo

Both gave her itchy,swollen throat which I know is an allergic reaction to something

Now the doc wants her to try tirosint

Does anyone else have the same reaction to meds

Or could it be something different

Extremely common to be very low vitamin levels with Hashimoto's

Presumably she has Hashimoto's ?

Is she on strictly gluten free diet or tried it?

Or dairy free diet?

Hashimoto's frequently affects the gut and leads to low stomach acid and then low vitamin levels

Poor gut function can lead leaky gut (literally holes in gut wall) this can cause food intolerances. Most common by far is gluten. Dairy is second most common.

According to Izabella Wentz the Thyroid Pharmacist approx 5% with Hashimoto's are coeliac, but over 80% find gluten free diet helps, sometimes significantly. Either due to direct gluten intolerance (no test available) or due to leaky gut and gluten causing molecular mimicry (see Amy Myers link)

Changing to a strictly gluten free diet may help reduce symptoms, help gut heal and slowly lower TPO antibodies

While still eating high gluten diet ask GP for coeliac blood test first or buy test online for under £20, just to rule it out first

Assuming test is negative you can immediately go on strictly gluten free diet




(If test is positive you will need to remain on high gluten diet until endoscopy, maximum 6 weeks wait officially)




Trying gluten free diet for 3-6 months. If no noticeable improvement then reintroduce gluten and see if symptoms get worse

Has she tried NDT? I have taken it and it suited me. I took Thyroid S from Thailand because even though I had all the symptoms of an underactive thyroid (unable to get out of bed, blurred vision, weight gain etc) but because my TSH was in range my GP would not prescribe me Levothyroxine even though Dr Skinner had prescribed it for me once before.

Yes the np had throat swelling irritation

Then same thing after trying Levo

I had the exact reaction when I was first prescribed levothyroxine. I am diary intolerant and it was the lactose in it that. The problem was resolved after I pointed out.

You could be making an unsupportable assumption there.

We have seen quitea number of people who seem to have absolutely no problem with dairy products who, nonetheless, seem to react to levothyroxine products that contain lactose. Why? I don't know. Nor am I aware of any research on this issue.

I had a very bad reaction and it was confirmed by my doctor that it was the lactose in the Levothroxine as I am lactose intolerant. It my personal experience not an assumption

did you get anywhere with this as I too am having problems with all thyroid drugs and think Im allergic.

Her last D3 level was up to 75 max is 100 B vitamin level was in the upper range 75%.

She got her Armour Thyroid refilled and side effects got worse, after two hours of taking it.

Doctor then sent her T3 6.25 mcg + T4 22 mcg First day taking it she felt better next day symptoms came back. She thinks her body was tricked for one day then it figured out it was taking Thyroid Meds and started to react to it again. Got to the point she has to sleep in a recliner cause of panic attach and dizziness, some nights. She has had the brain zap and throbbing sensation when low on Thyroid hair falling out a lot too, very dry looking. she is in the recliner 80% of the time, her throat is clogging and getting tight again now too.

Convinced her so called Holistic Doctor that she does not convert well we got them to compound Thyroid USP Porcine 30 mg. in the lab. Said it would be a clean very little filler used but must be cellulose. Was told to take one at 6am and after 2 pm. the second dose, she even slept that night This worked for one day as today now 2 hours after taking the first dose her symptoms returned. She is in the recliner 80% of the time, her throat is clogging and getting tight again now too. She gets the feeling that she is slowly dying, very depressed.

Any idea’s?

My wife 59 years old just started having problems last 3 months. Despite being on thyroid meds for 14 years. We wonder if MD custom the compounding pharmacy has some filler in it that does not agree with her. But the Armor Thyroid has the same filler used in small tablets not capsule that MD Custom uses.
