Has anyone experienced severe allergic reactions that they didn’t have before TT and taking Levothyroxine?
The reason I ask is because I was stung by a wasp this morning and I had a severe reaction, so much so that the Paramedics were called and I had to have IV corticosteroids and antihistamines. They wanted to admit me but my friend who is a senior sister in A&E stayed with me.
I have been stung by wasps before and I’ve never had a reaction like this, and the only thing I can think of is now being on Levo following TT for Thyroid Cancer in 2016. I’m just wondering if anyone else has experienced anything like this!
Thanks

No T3 yet but I’m ever hopeful, I was supposed to have FBT with Thyroid and Vits on Monday but the GP’s have cancelled it because of some nationwide problem with the labs, so I’m still waiting, following this I was going to ask GP if she would consider a private script so that I could maybe source T3 in Germany.
Here's a quote from that link, but looks like a useful document for you.
"Anyone can become allergic to an insect sting – not only people who already have allergies such as hayfever or food allergies.
The first sting is not the one that causes the problem, but it may cause sensitisation – the stage at which the person becomes allergic. If sensitisation occurs, it is a later sting that will provoke the symptoms. Being stung by one type of insect will not make you allergic to the venom of another."
Google for "allergic reaction to wasp sting" to see more information.
Glad you are feeling better now. You'll need to report it to your GP and then you'll probably be given an epipen (or similar) to keep with you in case you get stung again. You don't want to have another reaction like that one.
By the way, I found your reply when I looked back here, but it wasn't sent to me by Healthunlocked. You need to choose the 'Reply' button on the post you are replying to - it's on the line straight after the last line of that. Hope that makes sense. It can be a bit confusing until you are used to it.
Yes I have had a total thyriod removal way back in 1999. For a year or so I had ichy bumps eyes itchy etc. I was informed that its takes up to a year to get use the the t4. To be honest It went on for much longer and I ended up with CFS and I am still not 100 Percent right but managble.
Iw ould check you adrenals out that is alway my adivce for the 1 st port of call. Good luck John
I have allergy issues with Levo but the problem started the moment I began taking it, (also true if I take the liquid form.) Maybe your GP could arrange some allergy tests so you can and try identify what caused you to have such an awful reaction. I hope you're feeling better. X
hi, could i ask how you manage your thyroid condition with your allergy issues with levo,im due to try lio because im allergic to the thyroxine in levo
I'm now on NDT, and the allergy issues disappeared. When I was still on Levo I used to take antihistamines. They helped with the swelling and congestion but they did nothing for the feeling that I'd been poisoned. Switching to an alternative was my only option, really. I hope you also find an alternative that works for you as it's no fun at all. X
Glad to hear your feeling better, thankyou for your reply. Yes I hope I'm ok on lio, its a very difficult road to navigate to try to get some semblance of feeling more normal that's for sure.
gosh, did they thats very good and interesting, thankyou for letting me know, i hope im not allergic to lio like i was to levo, and that i respond in a good way to it. Are you on one specific brand of the lio
I'm no longer on Lio as my heart wasn't especially happy on Lio alone. My heart also didn't appreciate Levo at ridiculously low doses, nor porcine NDT. It seems content on a bovine replacement. It's such an individual thing, but I'd be optimistic that you might be allergy free on Lio. That your doctor is willing to prescribe it is a victory of sorts in itself. X
Sounds like you've had alot of experience with all the meds, glad your more comfortable on what you have now. I know many struggle to get lio. The doctor wasn't rearly left much choice after I had such a severe reaction after first dose of levo. That's my concern with lio, I'm so sensitive with allergies and side effects, I don't respond well to meds, body doesn't like them, problem is, its not happy having nothing for hypo either, especially the heart. 🤷♀️. Thankyou for replying 🙂
Yes! My body is similar in that it seems to be very adverse to many medications. It's a bit of a lottery as to how it'll react. It can be quite the drama queen so I've come to dread trying any medications. But, in the event that Lio doesn't work for you, there are other options. Most importantly you've got a doctor who knows you're allergic to Levo. Tedious and draining as it all is, keep going. X
I know exactly what you mean as that's how mine is, I dread taking anything, so although I'm desperate to try the lio to feel somewhat better, I'm also dreading it in case it's not good. thankyou so much for your help and sharing your experience, it makes a difference to know somebody has been through similar and come out the other side, despite the ongoing struggle with it all
