Hi all, ive been hypo for 26 years and although levo has increased slowly over the years its always been 'in range' currently on 225mcg daily and my test last week showed a TSH of 13.5 despite the meds which i'm thinking would show a conversion problem. Dr thinks it the stress i'm under at the moment but I cant see that this is the case, her answer was to put the dose up by 25mcg a day and re test in a few weeks.
Have any of you had this happen suddenly after years of being medicated?
All vit's amd other tests normal.

Does she only test the TSH? That doesn't tell you anything at all on its own. You need at least the FT4 tested, but preferably the FT3. I don't think your doctor actually 'thinks' your high TSH is due to stress, I think she's grasping at straws because she actually has no idea. You need to get your FT4 and FT3 tested together to see how well you convert. The TSH won't tell you.
Have you recently had change in brand of Levothyroxine?
Many people find Levothyroxine brands are not interchangeable.
Many patients do NOT get on well with Teva brand of Levothyroxine. Though it is the only one for lactose intolerant patients. Teva is the only brand that makes 75mcg tablet.
Or started any new medication or other obvious changes?
Do you have autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto's) diagnosed by high thyroid antibodies?
For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 plus both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested. Also EXTREMELY important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12
Low vitamin levels are extremely common, especially if Thyroid antibodies are raised
What vitamin supplements do you currently take?
Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and before eating or drinking anything other than water .
Last Levothyroxine dose should be 24 hours prior to test, (taking delayed dose immediately after blood draw).
This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip, best not mentioned to GP or phlebotomist)
Is this how you do your tests?
Private tests are available. Thousands on here forced to do this as NHS often refuses to test FT3 or antibodies or all vitamins
Medichecks Thyroid plus ultra vitamin or Blue Horizon Thyroid plus eleven are the most popular choice. DIY finger prick test or option to pay extra for private blood draw. Both companies often have special offers, Medichecks usually have offers on Thursdays, Blue Horizon its more random
Bloods should be retested 6-8 weeks after each dose change (or brand change) in Levothyroxine
Come back with new post once you get results and ranges from previous results and again when you get new tests in few weeks time
