Is neck pain normal with hypothyroidism? Help! 🙄

Hi! My neck has been hurting on my right side. All of a sudden it just aches. Is this normal? Anyone else have a problem like this?

I’ve got central hypothyroidism (secondary) so I still have my thyroid.

Any help would be much appreciated.

My numbers:

TSH is no longer tested due to pituitary surgery

I don’t have any reasons why, but, I often suffer with neck pain on the left side, it’s feels muscular but can come out of nowhere and sometimes go just as quick. If I drink alcohol I get cramps in what feels like my throat which take my breath. I don’t know if it’s related to my thyroid issues but I have no other explanation. I’m hypo (hashis) on my way to my results being in range (I hope!)

So glad you are going to the semi-finish line! Isn’t it crazy about how much the thyroid/ pituitary controls?

I have exactly the same. Especially when I drink alcohol! X

🤗 I can’t drink alcohol 🤪 because of drug interaction. There are days I just want to go on a bender so bad.,,,,,

I used to get neck pain before I started meds or if I'm undertreated. If there was any air conditioning aimed at my neck or draft of cold air even my own breath on my shoulder in bed would hurt. A doc told me it's the neck going into a spasm caused by thyroid problems, and said 'oh yes it's part of the problem ' I used to always have scarves etc. I don't get it much now.

Good luck.

Thank you Marymary7

I was thinking it was all me. I see my osteopath next week. I’ll ask her about it! Best to you...

I remember now the doc said the weakened muscles in the neck go into spasm. Yours may be something else. At least you are being looked at. I’ve also had frozen shoulder two times in both of them and its still weak now, I cannot do the whole range of movements at yoga, this is also common in thyroid problems 😎

I think I’d fit right in with your crowd, crooked neck and all!

I frequently have an ache on the left side beside my thyroid. It’s not terribly sore but hurts if I push gently there. I usually get it on holiday and fear it may be wine-related!?

I think 🤔 it maybe related to shoulder surgery two months ago. Positional sleeping 😴?

Unfortunately I get it too. I find I need to keep my neck warm.

A heat pad when watching tv, a coloured scarf when out and about (they do nice ones these days). It is there most days, but usually I can keep it down to minimum pain.

I also see an osteopath, just once a month (as they are expensive), can also help to keep the pain down.

So right with the cold. I tried to ice it last night and it got all crampy. Tonight I’m going for the heat!

I also use a heat pad, sometimes i still need to when I’ve been doing computer work. My beanybag is a savour for this.

Most people hold tension in their shoulder/neck area a Alexander Technique instructor will tell you. Physical Therapists will tell you it is common for people to hold their shoulder/head incorrectly. They will give you a tailored set of exercises to work on after a personal evaluation.

An Alexander instructor will more gently help you gain awareness & mastery over where you carry tension in your body. They aim to teach you how to improve your overall alignment. A Physical Therapist seems a bit more preoccupied with improving your overall cardiovascular status.

It you find a therapist trained in both disciplines, & they do exist you are really in luck. On occasion you can score someone trained in both plus dance. Infrequently you can find Alexander group classes of various sorts. These are more economical.

I am a believer in this (therapist) approach because it has never failed me. I find it addresses the underlying problem which is a very common one I’m told of carrying tension, & one’s head out of alignment.

I personally find it worth the expense, if & only if you can locate a therapist of high caliber. These are the therapists personal trainers go to if they themselves develop problems, but you have to wait a month or two to get a appointment (in the states). This talent set is in demand.

If you have already tried something along these lines without success then hopefully other’s suggestions work better for you.

I had shoulder surgery on my right side in July. I’m up for surgery on my left side(shoulder replacement) in October and fear you are right with alignment issues. I will ask surgeon for a physiotherapist referral. Thank you to all who have helped me. Many blessings to all....

Hi

I personally think your t3 levels are too low. Also low levels of vitamin d and magnesium can affect your muscles.

If you have hashimotos ldn is worth a consideration and it helps sleep and energy levels enormously.

( the magnesium must be a red cell magnesium test not a serum which GPs do and get confused. If the later was low you’d be dead as it’s needed to pump your heart.)

I have severe neck issues and ( as a former physio myself ) I am lucky to have my own equipment. Ultrasound is massively helpful but you’d not get enough of it in a session to be of great use.

I go to an Osteopath who is v good at manipulation and he made me go to Pilates. It’s been a life saver. I was undiagnosed nil t3 for for 11 years and my muscles are a mess. However the stretching and core strength has been amazing.

( you can read up on magnesium deficiency on drmyhill.co.uk and on the home page on the left hand side click tests then red cell magnesium. That leads into a larger piece on magnesium sulphate injections which are amazing.)

My posture is pretty good and I already did stretches for my neck but I can’t manipulate my own. I have a weekly massage too. That also is v good as most neck issues emanate from tight back muscles. Have tried Alexander technique but for me Pilates massage and Osteopath work well.

A partner comes in handy for massages even a basic one.( try to ensure people use coconut oil not scented oils like bio as they just are not good for your body).

For Epsom Salts to be the most effective it’s got to be 50% to the bath water so using it topically is best. And yes heat like a hot water bottle is better. You only ice in the first 2 days. Us thyroid sufferers are cold enough.

Lastly a basal thermometer is fab to monitor temps. Yours I am sure would be less than 36.50 degrees.

On the same web page in the top right hand corner type of the search engine type in orchestra.

Best article on achieving good health.

Good luck

Hi Howard39

You’ve given a lot to think about...I just got magnesium glycinate to help with sleep 😴 got that from someone on this site. Also taking vita D3 and calcium citrate. I’ve also increased my Synthroid to 82 mcg . My neck pain increases with tension so I’m grabbing my bag to heat and put around my neck.

Best to you,

Sorry you're in pain!

I too have neck pain on one side. I have Graves Disease and was diagnosed in February 2019. I find if its not pain one place its another and changes to a new location fearing I have something incurable. when I was hyper it was my back. Now my neck and shoulders are in agony. It is like pain bounces around my body. My neck and shoulder pain have been for quite a few months now.

Mine is my left side but it affects my shoulder and arm. Does it affect your shoulder and arm too?

I take Turmeric Curcumin supplements. I also use a magnesium spray. I found it irritated my neck so I only use it on the bottom of my feet at night as recommended. I also take B-Complex, D3 and someone told me about D3-K2 which I have added to my daily vitamin dose. I also recently started Vitamin C because I feel like I always get sick. Someone else told me about Oil of Oregano for you immune system. I have been on antibiotics so many times this year it gave me Oral Thrush which I fear spread. Just started Oregano yesterday so I am not sure how it will help.

I hope you feel better.
