Facial pain? Like an INTENSE Electric shock on both sides of the jaw.

Hi everyone,

I built up some energy today and went on a bike ride. Suddenly, I got an incredibly intense electric shock type feeling in both sides of much jaw under my temple. I couldn’t move my mouth or face to scream but probably would have done so involuntarily due to the pain. It passed after a moment and I decided to have a drink break. As I drank my water it returned again but seemed even worse. Has anyone else had this trouble? It was truly shocking! X

I used to get pains in my jaw caused by TMD:

I have had what I have described as feeling like being shot in my left jaw. (Of course, I've never been shot anywhere. It is purely imaginary.)

Went on for quite some time.

Also, I became very sensitive to cold or cool air over that area of my face.

Occasionally I still get a shock but it is much milder.

Have to say, I'd hate for it to happen while cycling.

Gosh that sounds horrible. I think I would go speak to my dentist or doctor - in case it is trigeminal neuralgia. Horrible end to a nice bike ride.

I had this for a while, it's very unpleasant, as are the treatments for it. Hopefully it was just a few trapped nerves.

Yes, the fact it is on both sides of the poster’s jaw sounds like it might not be TN. Definitely not nice anyway, hopefully it will be resolved quickly.

My reaction to a pain like that would be to book a GP apppintment, but also to put some Magnesium gel on the area just to see if it helps with any localised inflammation and to dull the nerves and loosen up any spasm.

I use Mag gel and lotion on lots of aches and pains these days (it is great for backs). You can get a bit of a warming sting with it, but as I am no longer very Mag deficient my skin can tolerate it.

Facial neuralgia maybe?

Have you had a crown installed lately? I had very bad jaw pain caused by a crown that was too high for my teeth to meet normally. Problem was not solved until the crown was ground down by an endodontist to correct the bite. The crown was supposed to have been installed with a temporary glue, but the dentist was unable to remove it at the next visit. Apparently somebody used the wrong glue and I was made to suffer not only pain, but extra dental expenses.
