Near Total TT, not taking levo?

Hello to all,

I am a 29 Yr old male and had a near total thyroidectomy in Nov2017. I am feeling miserable most the time.. Do you think I could stay off levo and rely on the leftover tissue gland? I still have about 20-25%of my thyroid tissue according to the ultrasounds.. ..and still have my parathyroids..

Hello Gaben

I think you should ask your doctor this question along with asking him to run a full thyroid panel so we have some information about your on ability to produce thyroid hormones.

Off the top of my head I would think you would need some supplementation but this is just blind opinion, and not worth anything.

You need to get some blood tests run to include T3 and T4 along with your ferritin, folate ,B12 and vitamin D for any sensible, considered advice from this website. Once you are with these results post back again, along with the ranges, ( numbers in brackets ) and people better able than myself will talk you through what it all means.

P.S. Just as a point of reference a fully functioning working thyroid would be supporting you daily with approximately 100 T4 + 10 T3.

Are you taking levo at the moment? Is that what is making you miserable? If so, you probably aren't taking enough. Doctors do tend to under-medicate their patients because they don't understand how the thyroid works. So, it would be a good idea if you could post some numbers: results and ranges. :)

If you have failed to get near 100% recovery after you op 20 months ago and have not taken any thyroid hormones, then it seems likely that your remaining tissues are unlikely to ever fully restart again. Mine took just 3-4 months to recover back in 1989-90.

Suggest you get your doc to give you some medication to help the situation.

Whatever you do, highly recommend you DO NOT have radio iodine ablation to kill off those tissues, unless you are extremely ill indeed, as levothyroxine on its own is virtually guaranteed to leave you permanently ill afterwards.

Thank you very much for all of your responses :) I am taking 150 mcg since last year November. My TSH is suppressed to 0,08...In May I stopped taking levo and from the following day I took 1grain of NDT (Thyroid-s) just as a trial. On the 6th day I felt very good but it lasted for 3day only.. The episodes of barely functioning, palpitations, inner tremor, lethargy, water retention on and off as well as changing bowel movements continued.. So I am back to 150levo since.. According to the best endocrinologist found here in the capital city I am over suppressed by thyroxine.. I am gonna post results once I have an up to date one.

Dear Panda, Yes I know, I am happy that they didn't choose RAI.

All the best to you all:)
