How to do this in the UK

Hi All,

I had a couple of tests (Jan 19 and Apr 19) where TSH was 5-6 and FT4 was low normal. Other values were not tested.

I did another test after someone told me these numbers were poor. I now have TSH a bit a bit lower, around 4, and T4 and T3 are low or low normal.

Of course the blurb with the results declared I am in range and my Thyroid is healthy. I don't believe this. I've lived nearly all my 47 years in perfect health, so not a hypochondriac. I want to restore balance before I become full blown hypo.

The TpoAb was 0, and the TgAb was 491. I am waiting for an appointment with my new NHS doctor where I can discuss these results. I have been reading about the situation with the NHS and preparing myself to be told 'you are fine' or be offered Levothyroxine.

I do not have many symptoms. My pulse rate is low, and I rely on stimulants to keep me awake. Even with stimulants, there are times during the day where I cannot function unless I nap. I wake from my 7 hours feeling at times exhausted.

Has anyone gone down the private route who could comment on the type of costs to expect? Has anyone been able to find a progressive doctor on the NHS who doesn't cover their catchment area who could offer some guidance?

TSH 5-6 is far too high. In a lot of other countries, it'd be investigated and you'd probably be given levothryroxine. I would definitely get it looked into in case it starts making you feel really unwell. I don't think TSH at that level is healthy for e.g. the heart.

Thanks Koala. I agree my thyroid is not healthy for whatever reason. I also think it's likely the only treatment I'll be offered is Levothyroxine, if any.

My question was more about how to go about exploring the options for finding more progressive treatment in the UK.

It is unlikely that the NHS will treat you unless TSH is over 10, or free T4 is under range and TSH is over range, or TPO antibodies are over range and TSH is over range. You might get private treatment - you can get a list of doctors from TUK.

Not what you're looking for?
