FOR THE PAST 8 MONTHS MY BLOOD TEST SHOWS I HAVE MILD NEUTROPHILS. THE TEST IS REPEATED EVERY 3 MONTHS. THIS WEEK IT SHOWS HIGH. CAN SOMEONE TELL ME WHY IT IS ALWAYS ON MY BLOOD RESULTS EVEN WHEN I AM WELL. I ASK MY DOCTOR AND SHE TELLS ME MY WHITE BLOOD CELLS ARE FIGHTING MY RED BLOOD CELLS. I NEED TO KNOW WHY THIS IS ON GOING.

High levels of neutrophils means you have an injury of some sort, or an infection. But, I'm not sure that white blood cells fight red blood cells. That sounds a bit strange.

THIS IS WORRYING. GOGGLE SAYS THE WHITE BLOOD CELLS FIGHT THE RED BLOOD CELLS IN BLOOD CANCER OR

PATIENTS HAVING CHEMOTHERAPY. MY B12 IS FINE. I AM DOING ANOTHER BLOOD TEST IN 8-10 WEEKS. AT THE MOMENT I HAVE THROAT INFECTION AND I DO UNDERSTAND WHY IT IS HIGH BUT WHY IS IT ON GOING WHEN I AM WELL? ON MONDAY I WAS DISORIENTATED FOR ALMOST 12 HOURS. I WAS NOT AWARE OF MY SURROUNDS, HAD NO FOOD, DRINK OR MEDICATION. I STRANGELY TOOK ONE CALL FROM MY AUNT WHICH FRIGHTENED HER BECAUSE I SPOKE RUBBISH. SHE TRIED TO KEEP ME AWAKE BY ASKING ME QUESTIONS BUT ONE WORD WILL COME OUT OF ME AND I WOULD GO QUIET AGAIN. MY SON ARRIVED AT 02.00 HRS AND GAVE ME A CUP OF WATER AND COAXED ME TO DRINK SOME PACKET SOUP. I HAD THE 1ST CUP OF WATER BUT COULD NOT DRINK THE SOUP. HE FORCED ME TO EAT ONE CRACKERS. HE TOOK MY TEMPERATURE WHICH WAS 39.5. HE WAS WORRIED AS HE SAID MY FACE LOOKED LIKE I WAS DRUNK AND HE HAS NEVER SEEN ME LIKE THIS. I DO NOT DRINK OR SMOKE. I FELT TOO TIRED TO GO TO HOSPITAL. I HAD BEEN IN THE HOSPITAL IN THE MORNING FOR A ROUTINE APPOINTMENT AND BLOODS. MY DOCTOR TOLD ME THE FEVER CAUSED THIS SITUATION. I DO NOT BELIEVE HER. I KNEW I WAS UNWELL AND I DECIDED NOT TO DRIVE MYSELF TO HOSPITAL SO I CALLED A CAB. I WAS CONSCIOUS WHEN I ARRIVED HOME AS I SWITCHED MY BED ON. I FELT UNWELL AND I HAD DONE MEDICAL OBSERVATIONS IN THE MORNING AND SUGAR LEVEL, BLOOD PRESSURE AND PEAK FLOW WERE FINE. MY TEMPERATURE WAS NOT VERY HOT. WHAT KNOCKED ME OUT IS WHAT I DO NOT KNOW. I AM HAVING MY FIRST FOOD TODAY. I AM AWARE OF EVERYTHING AROUND ME BUT A BIT TIRED.

It sounds as if you've been quite unwell. So, it's not surprising that your neutrophils are high. But, that doesn't necessarily mean you have cancer. But I think you do need further testing. Sorry I can't be of more help than that.

I'm still picturing the white cells fighting the red cells! Sounds like the War of the Roses but I don't trust your doctor at all!

You do seem to have a lot going on though but I'm glad your son got some fluids inside you. When we aren't feeling well we can often do things that aren't helping but hopefully the hospital will sort it out but it may take some time so try not to worry in the mean time. Keep recording your observations though but importantly keep up your fluid levels as that can create more problems. Rest as much as you can to conserve your energy as it will have taken a dip. Hopefully you will feel some improvement soon. If temperature high a cold flannel on your forehead will help to bring it down but keep cooling down the flannel.

Let us know how things go on and put the cancer out of your mind. As a cancer survivor no one mentioned the word until tests proved the diagnosis, your GP was irresponsible in saying that, I'm still laughing at the white cells fighting the red! The white cells increase when you have an infection and fight the infection by gobbling it up-that's a much better picture to think about! Our bodies are very good at helping themselves so relax and let it get on with it-keep cool and carry on!

THANK YOU SO MUCH. YOU HAVE PUT A SMILE TO MY FACE. THAT WEIRD WAR GOING ON IN MY BODY MUST BE ENTERTAINING. I BELIEVE IT IS THEIR WAY OF PUTTING ME OFF THEIR TRAIL.

ON A SERIOUS NOTE, MY SON N MY AUNT ARE COMING WITH ME TO SEE MY DOCTOR. THEY SHOULD FIND FIND OUT WHAT INFECTION MY BODY HAS BEEN FIGHTING FOR 8 MONTHS.

Good you have some support in your corner. Sometimes I think we are frightened into submission.

Glad I put a smile on your face! I'm a Yorkshire lass so would be on the side of the white cells but dad and my gran who brought me up would be on the red!
