How to increase ferritin and folate

Recent blood test shows

Ferritin 88 (30 to 400)

Folate 4.7 (3.89 to 26.8

Could this be why I’m itching my arms every night driving me nuts. Dr is happy with my results, cannot find a reason for this itch.

How do I increase these levels please, many thanks

vitamin D was not tested, but I take D3000 K2 daily, my B12 result was 698 (180 to 999). These tests were taken by my GP, I have had itching now for a couple of months, wakes me up every night.

Are you taking any B12 supplements

Or any vitamin B complex or a separate folate?

Are you taking any magnesium or vitamin K2

Suggest you test vitamin D

NHS easy postal kit vitamin D test £31 via

I take vitamin D + K2 daily, B12, magnesium and 75 mcg of Vencamil. I am dairy free, tried gluten free for 4 months but it didn’t help at all. Thank you for your reply, I will test vitamin D

So with high B12 you can stop separate B12

Instead add a separate vitamin B complex to improve low folate and will help improve B12 levels too

B vitamins best taken after breakfast

Igennus B complex popular option. Nice small tablets. Most people only find they need one per day. But a few people find it’s not high enough dose and may need separate methyl folate couple times a week

Thorne Basic B recommended vitamin B complex that contains folate, but they are large capsules. (You can tip powder out if can’t swallow capsule) Thorne can be difficult to find at reasonable price, should be around £20-£25. iherb.com often have in stock. Or try ebay

IMPORTANT......If you are taking vitamin B complex, or any supplements containing biotin, remember to stop these 5-7 days before ALL BLOOD TESTS , as biotin can falsely affect test results

In week before blood test, when you stop vitamin B complex, you might want to consider taking a separate folate supplement (eg Jarrow methyl folate 400mcg)
