Help with thyroid uptake scan?

Butterfly87x

So I had the thyroid uptake scan today to figure out the cause of my overactive thyroid since I have hashimotos and am usually hypo.

My question is regarding post scan, I keep being told different things regarding being around my kids, one dr said 4 hours and don’t hug them then it’s fine another said 12 hours and be in another room, then as I was leaving hospital after scan I was told 24 hours and don’t sleep next to them or be close.

So confused and would love to just be cautious but as any mum will know it’s not as easy as that to just sit back and not be near them.

Anyone had the test and can give advice?

I had this scan too I was told 24 hours before in advance so i arranged to stay at my partners mums. Hope you ok

Yeah getting there, started the propranolol and it definitely helps with the symptoms once it’s kicked in! Can’t get other treatment until results of scan to show what exactly is going on but glad it’s out the way and just wait now to see results.

Can’t go anywhere for the night unfortunately, my MIL has been here all day helping so that’s been a bonus.

That's good and cant be easy either been in sane room as your little ones not been able to cuddle them x

Omg yeh it’s so hard, my two year old was already annoyed that I left him all day while at hospital he’s extra clingy now that I’m back 🙈 not ashamed to say tv is helping me out with him today!

I've never been given any instructions and I've had several done.

So confusing that there’s so many different views on it.

You have Hashi's, and your doctor can't work out why you suddenly had hyper-like blood test results? Dear lord, what do the teach them in med school? You had a Hashi's 'hyper' swing. That's the way Hashi's works. Didn't you know that?

Yes I know that but there’s other factors to consider hence the uptake scan, I recently had a baby so he wanted to rule out postpartum thyroiditis which in his opinion it isn’t as it’s been nearly 7 months and tsh is still <0.01.

Well, I hope the scan gives him the answers he wants. :)

Thanks 🙏

Are you still on Levothyroxine?

If so how much?

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 plus both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested. Also extremely important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

Low vitamin levels are extremely common, especially if Thyroid antibodies are raised

Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and fasting. Last Levothyroxine dose should be 24 hours prior to test, (taking delayed dose immediately after blood draw). This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip, best not mentioned to GP or phlebotomist)

Is this how you do your tests?

Ask GP to test vitamin levels

Private tests are available. Thousands on here forced to do this as NHS often refuses to test FT3 or antibodies or all vitamins

Medichecks Thyroid plus ultra vitamin or Blue Horizon Thyroid plus eleven are the most popular choice. DIY finger prick test or option to pay extra for private blood draw. Both companies often have special offers, Medichecks usually have offers on Thursdays, Blue Horizon its more random

Medichecks currently have an offer on until end of May - 20% off

No stopped thyroxine when I realised I was hyper back in March. I don’t see GP as I’m not in uk I see endo, he’s tested all levels, I’m severely deficient in vitamin d, folate & ferretin are within range. Had all t3, t4, tsh checked again recently, still hyper. Hence the uptake scan.

The above link takes you to your post of two months ago when you were going to have anti-bodies tested to check for Hashimotos - what were the results ?

It was graves I needed to check as I already know I have hashimotos antibodies, graves antibodies were negative. 👍🏼

I appreciate everyone’s comments however my original question was regarding the radiation effect after uptake scan and it’s danger to my kids. I can’t find much info online, anyhow it’s proved difficult to stay away from them but it’s been now 7 hours since test so I’m hoping it’s not too much a concern now.

I'm going back a few years but in 2004/5 when I had my uptake scan there were no warnings given to me.

I was warned after RAI 1-131 treatment the need for some self imposed isolation for a few days in the general public arena and for a couple of weeks for close family members especially around young children.
