This might help explain breathing problems associated with thyroid dysfunction:

Just had a look at this link: nahypothyroidism.org/how-th... I think it's a BRILLIANT article! Thank you. Brief and easy to understand but professional enough to help a professional to realise that maybe some of us (including myself) could do with an increase instead of a decrease in thyroxine!

What happens if you breathe out as much as you can (without forcing it)? Can you then do a deep breath after you've done that?

Can you add your most recent blood test results and ranges

Ideally you need blood test results for

TSH

FT4

FT3

TPO antibodies

TG antibodies

Vitamin D

Folate

b12

Ferritin

Low vitamin levels are extremely common

Perhaps you have a goitre which is squeezing your trachea. Suggest this to your doctor when you next see him.

This condition can become dangerous as shallow breathing can give you pneumonia, which is a killer especially for the elderly or if not treated with antibiotics.

Breathlessness is quite common in hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism can affect every organ in the body because the hormones help supply energy to the cells. I've had a number of episodes of breathlessness, and a few occasions of palpitations or irregular heartbeat. But they didn't last long. Can you take a deep breath if you need to, or does it just more effort than usual to breathe in? What about breathing out?

It does need to be checked out by a doctor. Perhaps you are anaemic. The most common causes of that are low iron, B 12 or Folate, which, as SlowDragon said, is common with hypothyroidism because our bodies often can't absorb nutrients properly.

I only realised yesterday that my lack of deep breath might be more or less continuous, though not nearly as bad as yours. I put it down to being old and unfit. Then realised that the main times I noticed it was in church on a Sunday. As well as the thyroid throat that often makes me too gruff to sing much, singing needs deep breaths, and that took much more effort than it should!

So thank you for bringing the subject up as it's helped me to realise I really do still have hypo symptoms in spite of below range TSH levels. It might help when I see the medics next as they are threatening to decrease my Levo even further.

Did you mean 125 mcg of Levo, T4? Do you take any T3, Liothronine or NDT? For you to have been on "thyroid meds" for 40 years and have a problem like deep breathing is absolutely shameful and casts a light on doctors that should be heard by all throughout this god-forsaken world.

Hi yes I’m on 125 of thrioxine but the deep breath is very frustrating but would feel better if I know that is because of Thrioud issues and nothing else thank you for reply
