Please help. I recently found out I have fatty liver disease (not alcohol related, in case that makes a difference). I know very little about this and my gp isn't the best at signposting to information. Everything I have read tells me I need to loose weight which (guts me) I can do but the eating plans I have come across all say I should eat grains and pulses, leafy greens, wheat, which contradicts everything I do to help my thyroid (hashimotos). Is there anybody out there that has hashimotos and a fatty liver? Can you help me find the right plan for me. I really appreciate anything you can help with.

Siara, I have hashimoto's and have had fatty liver twice over the last 9 years. I'm also diabetic which either seems to 'cause' fatty liver or is 'caused by' fatty liver. The only thing that worked for me was to eat a low carb diet. I eat as many vegetables as I want, salads and dressings made with extra virgin olive oil or canola oil, avocados, only berries for fruit, lots of various nuts, chicken and fish and some red meat, cheese, greek yogurt, flax, sugar free soy milk or almond milk, etc. There are lots of sites that will give you other ideas for eating low carb. I do eat potatoes with supper as the potassium in potatoes tends to keep my glucose lower than if I eat grains. I have tried legumes (lentils) as well, but they tend to spike my glucose. If I were you I would eat low carb for a good 4 to 6 months which will help with weight loss, keep your glucose low and clear out the fat in your liver. Exercise every day as well, weight lifting is the best with some cardio thrown in 2 or 3 days per week. After 6 months you can try introducing legumes as they are very good for you. I wish I could eat more of them.
I am on the Functional elimination diet, which treats all autoimmune diseases. On which you cut out all inflammatory foods for a month, then introduce foods one at a time to see how they affect your body . As all bodies are different this diet will be personalised to you.
It is the high glycemic foods that make you put on weight and stop you losing.
Low carb is definitely the way forward, all overweight people will probably have a fatty liver, but if you Google 'Dr berg' and watch his videos I'm sure you will be able to cure it, he is really good at explaining things and his videos are short enough for you not to get bored,
I've read that it can be caused by a high carb diet causing high triglycerides (which is what alcohol is, too), so going low carb is probably a good idea, I have a friend in the US who reversed his fatty liver and type 2 diabetes that way. Not saying keto, but just low starchy, processed carbs - no rice, pasta, bread, biscuits etc and low amounts of potatoes, parsnips etc.
I am waiting for blood test results on my liver, the test was asked for because of my high cholesterol 😢. I really am sorry to hear about this condition, I hope it’s not related to our thyroid condition. I will ask GP to refer to endocrinologist . I am so fed up with the growing list of symptoms.
I'm not sure if this will help but around here (an agricultural area) many of us have chickens. The area also has two world class universities which have big agriculturally leaning departments, Cal Poly and Davies. (California). Although we buy mealy worms for our chickens (they LOVE them) it is a very widely understood fact - from vets, Farm Supply retail and other owners that you do not give chickens too many mealy worms because the overload of high protein can give them fatty liver.
So there you are, I'm not suggesting you don't eat too many mealy worms (lol) I am suggesting that you watch your protein intake - or your facilitation of it's absorption. I am not sure how you will do the latter (you will have to look it up or ask here) but the former should be quite easy.
Siara I'm so sorry your having to deal with this too . I had TT and was dosed with T4 Only for many years . Consequently I had as a result of T4 Only developed many symptoms one was I developed fatty liver and jaundice . It took me a while to realize that being on T4 Only was not working for me personally . I learned since that I don't convert well T4 to T3 the more active thyroid hormones . Lowering my T4 dose and adding NDT for my T3 mix made a huge difference . In addition nutrients are very important to help thyroid meds work more efficiently . Going Gluten dairy sugar soy free made another great difference .
