Hyperthyroidism - greasy hair!

Hi everyone,

I’ve recently been diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism (jan 19) and taking carbimazole. Among the usually symptoms, palpitations, tremor etc I’ve started to get really really greasy hair, I can wash and dry it and my hair is literally still greasy! My hair is usually soft and shiny after a wash but lately I feel like I can’t get it clean 😩 does anyone else have this problem or has anyone got any tips please? XXX

Hi,

I’m hypothyroid but I had exactly the same problem before I realised my dose needed increasing. Even if my hair was freshly washed it was still greasy! I was also losing hair. It did stop once my levels were corrected so hopefully yours will sort itself out once your levels are normal. I know how frustrating it is, I used to wash my hair twice a day and it still had a greasy patch even as I was blow drying it!

Hi Sarah, very interesting that your hair was greasy when under-medicated. Mine is exactly the same. It becomes lank, thin and greasy when I’m under medicated and won’t hold any sort of curl. As soon as I’ve washed and dried it, it sits lankly on my head and looks as though it needs washing again.

My levels are reasonable but antibodies still high and have noticed that my hair gets greasy quite quickly.

I haven't really noticed this but have had the thinning hair. I've now got hair extensions which have made me feel a whole lot better!! Recommend them to boost your confidence. My levels now seem to be correcting themselves.. so will see what happens with my hair.

Thanks for the replies ☺️ It’s really frustrating me at the minute! I can only wear it up in a bun with a load of dry shampoo in to just so it’s not as noticeable, I’m also losing hair too! I’m back at the hospital tomorrow for bloods and another follow up so hopefully my levels will have started to correct themselves, although I’m not confident they have xx
