Titanium surgical clips

So had my op in November 2017 for thyroid cancer. Had my treatment. And got the all clear, but for the past year I have been suffering with pain in my scar. It feels like a knife stabbing me constantly and is very sore and painful . I feel as though the titanium surgical clips are trying to get out of my neck. I have been backwards and forwards to my surgeon. I have tried everything my surgeon has recommended from different medications to acupuncture to an injection into the front of my neck. Nothing has helped. I am pushing for surgery again to remove some of the clips.

So today I am going to see if my surgeon will agree to do the operation. Can't go on like this as its so painful. My scar is still red.

Fingers crossed.

You have my sympathy and some doctors seem to just do the op, and thereafter don't reassure the patient who's complaining. We don't complain unless something bothers us and, especially after an op for thyroid cancer, it would worry you more than something else. He should not dismiss your worries. This is a link and am not sure it will be helpful:-

Two excerpts:

All blood investigations were within normal limits.Patient was treated symptomatically and reassured but she came with persistent symptoms on the subsequent visits so radiological investigation (CT neckFigs. 1 and 2) was orderedwhich revealed 2 foreign body shadows one on the right sidewithin the soft tissue of the neck and another one on the leftside just near the tracheo-esophageal groove causing the com-plaint symptoms (Fig. 2).Neck exploration was offered to the patient with risks and benefits of the surgery but the patient opted to wait and see.

"It has been observed that patients who undergo thyroidectomy complain of throat pain and short-term dysphagia fol-lowing their surgery. 3,5Their surgical intervention and traumatic intubation can be explanations for these symptoms. However, no actual cause tends to be found for the majority ofcases.

3,4 These symptoms, that mimic laryngopharyngeal reflux(LPR), cause a relative disability in the short-term period fol-lowing a thyroid gland surgery.4,5 Our patient was treated as LPR but did not improve with medications and that was the indication for radiological investigations which revealed the foreign bodies that were causing the vague presenting symptoms. Upon searching the English literatures; this is the firstreported case of surgical clip causing such vague symptomsto a patient post thyroidectomy. In conclusion, there is a variety of clinical manifestations post total thyroidectomy including throat pain which have to be well investigated by General surgeons and ENT surgeons and it is important for generalsurgeons and ENT surgeons to keep in mind such causes of persisting post thyroidectomy throat pain especially whenthere are no local causes found.

You've got me worried as I probably have some in my neck! This procedure was never mentioned to me by anybody as seems to be the norm for so many medical procedures.

I have never experienced any pain or discomfort at all.

Suggest you read the conversation at surgeonsblog.blogspot.com/2... which indicates that this is something that happens more often than is supposed for many different operations. Reminds me of the situation we have where the hypothyroid patient taking levo which does not bring reasonable health is blamed for failing to take the medicine as directed.
