I was on 100mg of NDT and since upped the dose to 150mg 5 days ago, I have absolutely no desire of eating sugar or carbs wich is very good, but instead I really crave protein now. Why the change? I am not complaining anyway but very curious as of why? since increasing the dose, I have been very regular in the bathroom department and sleeping better, I never Thought that increasing a dose could help with sleeping either. Any thoughts? Thanks!!
No carbs or sugar cravings since I upped my NDT... - Thyroid UK
No carbs or sugar cravings since I upped my NDT dose, but protein cravings instead, How come?
Interesting! I find myself craving carbs when my hypo symptoms are worse. Or is that just an excuse to eat?
I have read that carbs cravings when Hypo is because carbs made up for all the t3 our body is lacking...
Interesting read...if I have over exerted (e.g. not had a good night's sleep!) I am insatiably hyper-hungry and the only relief is from hefty carbs. Protein doesn't sate it, but big slabs of bread do. (With resultant rapid weight gain, of course.) Have assumed it's adrenal blood sugar issue. Scared to try Berberine and cause IBS.
Dont be scared of berberine, is amazing I tried it and it all went well 0 problems with IBS.
Are you sure it is protein, not fat or iron?
Well, I am sure I am craving protein, if it was an iron need I would be craving black beans for example.. and I dont think it is a fat craving as when I am eating meat I do not want to eat the fat tissue of it, so I dont know....I havent tested iron and ferritin either.
Maybe, but a steak is fat and iron as well as a bunch of amino acids. Does anyone crave black beans? I certainly don't and I'm vegan! You could well needs extra protein to build muscle tissue if your metabolism is waking up. But eat your fat, you need it.
Being hypothyroid has a big impact on how the body handles and makes energy from food. This is Krebbs cycle and glycogen storage in the liver and all those things from school that I think I should reread, but never get round to
This means that hypo people can struggle to get energy from the more complex foods like fat and protein, keep themselves going without regular meals, and sometimes go into low blood sugar states. But carbs and sweet foods give easy access to energy, through the most straightforward route, and some hypo people find them essential to keep energy levels okay.
Maybe craving other foods is a sign your treatment is finally in a good place, and your body is having an easier time making energy from things besides carbs!
Thanks!! I really hope so. I will search for Krebbs cycle.
There is a lot to read I've got that a funny feeling about Krebb's cycle, like the one a detective has for the first half of the mystery
You rarely see this discussed in a straightforward way about thyroid function, but I've picked up a bit of info just in bits and pieces in papers that are mostly about other things.
I believe this is the reason hypo people either love or hate a low carb high fat diet. Ketosis is, I think, a different channel for turning food into energy roughly equivalent to Krebb's cycle (which is for sugar only, so the body has to break down other things and turn them into sugar), some hypo people are good at ketosis, so it's great for them if they can rule out the other channels of producing energy. But others aren't, so they struggle even more.
If your body craves protein why not indulge it? What scares you about eating more protein than you have done in the past? Have you ever actually calculated the amount of protein you eat? You might not eat as much protein as you think.
My husband has a distorted idea of how much protein he gets in his food and nothing I can say will alter what he thinks in this respect. So, if he was to eat a 100g steak he thinks he has eaten 100g of protein. But steak is approximately 61% water and 12% fat. So he is only eating (approx) 26g of protein. But he persists in seeing steak as 100% protein and is convinced it isn't good for him.

A common fallacy. You could show him the exact nutritional breakdown if you go to: nutritiondata.self.com which analyses the nutritional content of pretty much everything you'd eat (excluding roadkill - waste not, want not!) down to the vits and minerals. Very good website
I worked in Africa for 4 years. One time a few of us went "On safari" for a week. Almost the only thing we had to eat was plantain (cooking bananas) and beans. On getting back I couldn't have enough meat! Even a slight deficiency for a short time and our bodies let us know! Normally I am not a big meat eater at all.
