Hi...:). From 2 years am visiting gp becouse Im feeling not well. Just told me.. loose weight and more exercises....i do it! But my wieght is still growing up. 2 years ago I was 62kg (size small), now Im 94kg, extra large. Didnt change my diet or lifystyle. Tsh is 4.16, sometimes 3.57. But I know to diagnose underactive thyroid I have to do more results...but gp doesnt want to do.. wit d, wit d12, ferritine is normal however slow. Gp doesnt csre about it. Im sweelling, feel bad. Specialist told me...more diet and ecerciases. Its crazy....i showed my picturses. They still told that tsh its in normal range. I want kill my self have no power to fithing with stupid go, cant look on mirror

Hi and Welcome ! I am so sorry you are struggling. From the photos it is clear there is something happening in your neck. Which country are you in ? I live in Greece and there are walk-in Clinics for blood testing - they are private but not too expensive. Maybe you have the same in your country.

The tests are TSH - FT4 - FT3 and Antibodies TPO and Tg. Also have a scan/ultrasound. Again we have walk-in Clinics here so perhaps you do too.

Your TSH is too high ..

Your Doctors are not using their eyes. Try to find a new one.

Sorry to hear of all you are going through.

Is there someone, a friend or family member, you can take with you to see the GP?

Is there a different GP at the practice that you could see?

Try and get some rest and see a GP again, as soon you as you feel able to. Write a list of your concerns , make it clear that this is unexplainable weight gain as your diet and exercise habits have not changed. And say you are concerned about this swelling in your neck - say that you would like an:

Ultrasound scan of your Thyroid.

Also ask for an urgent referal to an Endocrinologist.

Also ask for Thyroid Antibodies blood tests : TPO Ab and TgAb (Thyroid Peroxidase and Thyroglobulin Antibodies ). AND FULL Thyroid Function blood tests - not just TSH. Ask for: FreeT3, FreeT4 and Total T4.

When having blood tests try and get them done very early in the morning and fast before test.

What did the doctor say about the pictures? Did you show them to all the doctors you saw?

Do not let the doctors make you feel uncomfortable.

Be determined that you will not be intimidated by anything they say. Politely insist on having a scan.

If the GP refuses then keep making appointments and seeing GPs until you get a diagnosis. You have a right to ask for a diagnosis and prognosis.

What Specialist did you see?

Did you know that if you are in the UK you can obtain copies of your medical records free of charge? Find out from the hospital which person & department deals with requests for copy records and send an email or letter asking for copies of your blood tests results and all your records.

Unexplained weight gain is one of the main symptoms of hypo (slow) thyroid. It is very important to get a proper diagnosis as doctors rely upon blood tests alone and ignore the clinical symptoms of patients.

You need blood tests (blood has to be drawn at the earliest possible - fasting (you can drink water) and request TSH, T4, T3, Free T4, Free T3 and thyroid antibodies. Make sure you are well-hydrated so blood draw is easier. If you were taking thyroid hormones (levothyroxine usually) you have to allow a gap of 24 hours between last dose and test and take afterwards.

Also get Vit B12, Vit D, iron, ferritin and folate.

It is a great pity that 'modern' doctors do not know any clinical symptoms and rely upon a blood test alone which may not be sufficient to diagnose. Tick off your symptoms on the above link. Always get a print-out of your results for your own records and you can post if you have a query.

We want to hear from you. Are you ok? It is so hard to struggle and still get no answers and no relief.

The endocrinologist I went to see said I have been very sick with hypothyroid for a very long time. But my TSH always came back normal until this last test.

At least you know to keep asking about it. I gave up complaining. Now I am much sicker than I would have been with an earlier diagnosis. Please keep trying!!

Were you able to get to a walk in clinic like Marz suggested?

Did you try the early morning blood test with fasting like Mary-intuss said?

Were you able to get a scan?

Hi , I cant find better gp... i was in my country ... and they treatment me...im taking levotyroksine from few days, without effect but its to early I think. Endocrinolog in hospital in Uk told me that ft4 ft3 arent important just tsh Omg ;). So I told its enough and go to my country for help. Unfortunatly I have no scan of thyroid.

So you have started on Levothyroxine, this is good news. I hope this helps you. But as you say it is early to say. It does take some time to feel good effect.

Sorry for the way you were spoken to by Endocrinologist in the UK hospital, sadly this happens to so many of us.
