I have autoimmune thyroiditis/hypothyroid (TPOs plus 600 though no idea how high...the other ones higher than it should be too?...but…. hormones all over the place so?...perimenapausal as well ...freezing cold/massive hot flashes...). Anyway, a little while before Xmas noticed a bit of a problem when swallowing...left it...could be a cough/cold coming on...'twas the season for viruses etc...then came a bit of a sore throat....then came the noticeable swelling (more than I'd noticed before but had put down to being overweight/fleshy neck etc). Was going to book a private scan..then I was going to leave it another week see if it went....went to doctors today...got nodules on my thyroid...being sent for a scan and blood tests … but I said to her, I'm taking my meds (as prescribed)...I shouldn't have nodules should I? She said no...should I be concerned?
Nodules can develop on the thyroid for a number of reasons. The majority are caused by an overgrowth of normal thyroid tissue, the cause of which is often unknown.
Others might arise due to Hashimoto’s leading to chronic inflammation of the thyroid, or less commonly in the UK, iodine deficiency, and of course, thyroid cancer. And you might be more likely to develop nodules if for instance, you had X-rays performed on your thyroid in infancy or childhood, if you have a pre-existing thyroid condition such as Hashimoto’s, if you have a family history of thyroid nodules, or if you’re 60 years of age or older.
