I have Achlorhydria and have almost constant heartburn. My stomach also has inflammation I am trying to heal so the HCL can’t be tolerated right now. Any help on what to do. Of course my GI Dr just prescribed a PPI. But I heard that makes it worse which makes sense. Any help or tips is greatly appreciated.

Achlorhydria help!
I took every PPI on the market, double doses, with NO relief! I also tried all the H2 meds. NO relief. I found a medicated gum called Chooz. Contains calcium carbonate. It is the ONLY thing that has helped! I order it directly from the company. Called Leosons. They are great to deal with. You can google for the contact info or look for them on FB.
The fundoplication surgery did not help. They repaired a large hiatal hernia but the heartburn rarely stops. I have been eliminating gluten from my diet, also dairy & lectin. It has helped.
But long term heartburn with PA, not good. Ups the chances for stomach cancer. I’m currently seeing a holistic nutrition person for help figuring out how to get my gut issues resolved once & for all.
Thank you! I am also searching desperately. I too have PA! I will look up the Chooz.
Hi Lynn,
My nutritionist recommended Biocare's Spectrumzyme which is a digestive enzyme and I find it brilliant for any heartburn issues I have. I think it's worth a try but have you thought of seeing a nutritionist about your condition? Anything is better than taking a PPI!
Hi Lyynn, I can swear by Apple Cider Vinegar. Stops heartburn and indigestion immediately. Just one tablespoon in water or honey and water as its pretty strong, but it works. Get the good stuff called Bragg Organic Apple Cider Vinegar because it also contains the mother plant so I have been told. Otherwise, get a good organic brand. It should be cloudy, but if not it will still work.
Sorry! I have felt so exhausted I have not even had the energy to go online.
I WISH I could say the fundoplication surgery was a miracle! I cannot. The morning after the surgery I had HEARTBURN! I told the dr & he was actually annoyed with me! I have been to 3 gastroenterologists. The last one claimed it was biliary reflux. He put me on a med called Questran. For 3 days, NO BURNING! I thought THANK YOU GOD! Finally. But the heartburn returned with a vengeance & has never gone away. Many days are tolerable but it’s ALWAYS there. As I said, the chewing gum truly does help me. Chooz. The company is Leosons. Google it & if you can’t get the info contact me again. I have it.
I just sense that all of my symptoms are connected. For FIVE years, actually more, I have said this to EACH dr. No one is listening. I actually think the gastro felt astonished when he told me that I DID have a medical issue that COULD be connected with ALL of my ongoing complaints!
I’m finding that when the drs can’t figure it out & if you are a woman, it’s mental. Anxiety. Depression. Hormones. The was GLAD that the gastro had to eat some crow! Proof that when I say I don’t feel well, something is WRONG with me, he could no longer assume I was just an overexcitable, deranged woman!
I will say avoiding the gluten does help lessen the heartburn. I do not have celiac disease, but my primary feels I do indeed have a sensitivity to gluten. I try to stay away from dairy too. I’ve been drinking goat milk, eating goat milk yogurt, & have only eaten very limited amounts of cheese containing dairy. I was told hard cheese, like parmigano from Italy, is ok in VERY small amounts. I have not eliminated strictly, but have probably avoided these common culprits of GI distress by at least 75%. In trying to eat ONLY whole food. Nothing processed. The nutritionist has me on supplements. I’m using some essential oils. Berberine is what helps with the heartburn. She suggested black licorice, but I dislike it. Apple cider vinegar in a glass of water on arising is another suggestion.
I have many days where I just want to say SCREW THIS & throw in the towel on ALL of this misery. But I don’t. I just take some deep breaths & try to regroup & keep moving on. My endocrinologist is suggesting I go to one of the large, university medical centers to seek the answers. They have more resources, often world renowned experts, & connections to other highly regarded specialists. None are located close to my home. The thought of travel to see a new dr is an exhausting thought! I have to get geared up for it mentally.
I’ve had 2 of my 8 scheduled iron infusions. I gave 2 scheduled for this week. If I have no improvement from these, I believe I will make the appointment with the GI dr in the city. I just feel like my life is passing me by & I can’t take feeling like this forever!
