Anyone recommend N-Acetyl Cysteine to help with Hashimoto’s??

Dr. Izabella Wentz Recommends this to help people with Hashimoto’s, she says.....

NAC helps to reduce thyroid antibodies, supports detoxification pathways (which are usually impaired in Hashimoto’s), and supports gut function. It can also help asthma, osteoporosis, oxidative stress, chronic inflammation, and other concerns often seen in those with Hashimoto’s.

Just wondered if it’s worth a go and where’s best to buy it from??

Any help would be greatfully received.

X

It helps no end with my breathing - although I haven't noticed it does much else. But, it also gives me headaches. And, I'm someone that never usually has headaches. So, I'm torn, really. Some times I take it, sometimes I don't. But, if you want to take it to reduce antibodies, don't bother. There's no proof that anything can reduce antibodies - and is it even desirable to do so?

I take NAC also for fatty liver, what is your opinion greygoose regarding use of NAC for fatty liver?

I use NAC to help me keep my lungs clear. I use it for 4 days on the trot, then don't take it for the next 3 days, then take it for 4 day, and so on. If I use it all the time I find it makes my lungs too dry, and makes me uncomfortable.

I haven't noticed any other benefit.

NAC produced the nastiest gas for me, nothing else I noticed other than the non stop smelliness....

You might want to change to a different brand of NAC . The fillers can be a problem for some .

Just pointing out that n-acetyl cysteine is apparently not a good idea if you have mercury dental fillings.

Best wishes

Why is that? 😨 I still have a lot of mercury fillings because my teeth are too dire to remove them all unless a new problem develops.

I've been taking NAC for sinus problems, and it's also useful when dealing with the aftermath of a cold.

Hi Hillwoman

I too have a number of very old amalgam fillings, which I will only have replaced with healthier composite fillings when replacement becomes necessary.

I looked into n-acetyl cysteine a while ago and found several references to it being unwise to take it if you have mercury fillings. One example:

diabetestepsrx.com/dont-lea...

Scroll down past the photos to see the warning.

I don't know for a fact that there is any risk and would be glad to be told differently. I just decided to play it safe and give n-acetyl cysteine a miss.

Hope you keep well and free of colds this winter.

Best wishes

Caroline

Thanks very much for the information. I'll look into this and let you know if I find any contrary opinions.

I've had one cold so far this year, not as bad as last winter's, but I hope I don't catch another one. My system doesn't cope well with viruses.

All the best.

Same here!! I’ve been in bed for two days and Ill for over a week, can’t get into Christmas.

I hope you feel better soon mcdermott. Colds are miserable.

I can never really get into Christmas, but it's much harder when you're under the weather. I'm sure our paleolithic ancestors just lit a nice big cave fire, buried themselves in furs and hibernated until spring. :-)

Thank you. I'd like to try NAC so would be pleased to receive evidence that it was ok to take with amalgam fillings.

I researched this quite a while ago. I remember reading somewhere that it could aid in the elimination of mercury along with other metals from the body, but that if mercury fillings were still present, it could cause them to release mercury into the bloodstream whereby it could then be deposited in other areas such as the brain. I will look into this again now that the subject has been raised and pass on any useful links.

Glad to hear you have mostly avoided colds this year. After much indecision, I finally went for the flu and pneumovax injections last week. Had two sore arms for a few days but I'm glad I did it in the end. I've had flu three times in my life so far and each time it really was dreadful. Not that the flu vaccine protects you totally but, hey, you can only do what you can do!!

Take care

I have never had flu jab so after listening to the news I asked my Dr but she said “knowing you, you would have a bad reaction to it”, so I didn’t bother!!! Wish I had now!!!

Caroline888 profile image
Caroline888 in reply to Flecmac

I wasn’t totally convinced it was the right thing to do. My doctor first suggested it at the end of October, then a couple of times afterwards. I was very undecided. I had my first ever flu jab last year with no reaction at all. The previous year I had horrendous flu and gave it to my daughter who had just started a new job😳. Not good! In the end we make the decision one way or another and hope it’s the right one for us.

Best wishes

I've had true flu a few times. You're right that it really is very nasty. Nonetheless, I've decided against vaccination, as my immune response to them has led to significant deterioration in health in the past.

Flecmac profile image
Flecmac in reply to Hillwoman

Yes that’s why I’ve avoided it.

Caroline888 profile image
Caroline888 in reply to Hillwoman

I was very undecided! I think, along with any medical condition, your lifestyle also has to affect your risk. I am susceptible to colds/flu and travel on buses, trams and trains, all of which are a hotbed of viruses at this time of the year. It’s really difficult to know what is the best thing to do. I found it even harder because I knew my husband would go along with my decision and have the same jabs. I would have felt responsible if it was a bad decision. However he had no reaction at all, no sore arms, nothing! At least the pneumovax was a one-off and never needs to be repeated.

There is a lot of conflicting advice. We each have to do what we think is best in our particular case.

Hope you stay well.

Best wishes

NAC is a precursor to Glutathione . We need Glutathione to support our immune system . NAC is also very helpful with our liver and lungs .
