Changes in period since taking levothyroxine

I started taking levothyroxine earlier in the year for hypo. Since I have started taking I have noticed when my period is due I get very sharp abdominal pain like trapped wind. They are not cramps. When I have told my GP they said yes it’s probably the hormones. But it’s very painful and uncomfortable. Anyone experienced or got any advice how to manage? I’m on 50/75 mcg on alternate days. Thanks

You're on a weird dose of Levo, is all I can say at the moment. I suspect the cramps are linked to being under-treated and hopefully someone will advise about that. Magnesium helps with cramps, in general: the spray sort messaged into the lower back could give some relief.

If you continue to get these problems - it could be to do with prostaglandins - like a mild form of endometriosis. I believe that rosehip can help, as can green tea and a few other natural anti-inflammatory foods - do some research. Taking B6 in particular can help with PMS. Also, given your situation it may be that now you're on Levo you are using up more zinc to help with conversion and you are therefore creating a bit of a deficiency. I take 30mg of Zinc every night as it lowers cortisol to aid sleep.

NB Low Zinc is linked to Endometriosis.

Low Zinc is also linked to Central Hypothyroidism.. read this...

Thanks so much for the advice. Endometriosis is exactly what I was thinking too it certainly feels that way. I will try the zinc and magnesium. I am also trying to conceive so having these issues is not helping! Doctors don’t give me any advice.

It will be worth your while in the long run to get your ferritin, Folate, Vit B12, and Vit D checked. They only advise to take folic acid in pregnancy. This is inadequate for someone with Hypothyroidism. Many deficiencies occur in Hypothyroidism due to low stomach acid. Deficiencies in B12 and Iron will only get worse during a pregnancy, but the symptoms will not be immediately obvious until you have zero energy and depression looking after a newborn!
