In one study US researchers found that over 30 percent of men and women past the age of 60 suffer from atrophic gastritis, a condition marked by little or no acid secretion. (8) A second study found that up to 40% of postmenopausal women have no basal gastric acid secretions. (9)
We know acid is needed to obtain nutrients but other signs of low acid include weak cracked fingernails, dilated capillairies in nose and cheeks and intestinal infections.
This article shows the conditions that are implicated with low stomach acid....including ours.
Another article full of greatly helpful and healing information Heloise. I know I am one of these women with low stomach acids having been tested for it long ago. This study would point to the idea that it may not be wise to presume digestive enzymes could substitute or work just as well as HCI.
Good point about the enzymes. Dr. Barron doesn't think you should even take them both at the same meal for some reason. There is also the point about the Betaine. I'm looking at more of the articles on this site.
