Hi,my mum 74 years old, she's on levo 100 mg,she did some test, but something that bothers me,it's that doctor says her d3 is very normal,58.0 ranges (14.0--60.0 ng/ml) she stooped supplementing while d3 is in "good range" any advice please??
Hi everyone,is it normal d3 to be 58.0?? - Thyroid UK
Hi everyone,is it normal d3 to be 58.0??

58ng/ml is very good. The Vit D Council recommends a level of 40-60ng/ml. If your mum has supplemented to reach that level, she should now go onto a maintenance dose and you need to work that out by trial and error.
What dose of D3 has she been taking?
Has she been taking D3's important cofactors magnesium and Vit K2-mk7? D3 aids absorption of calcium from food and K2-mk7 directs the calcium to bones and teeth where it is needed and away from arteries and soft tissue where it can be deposited and cause problems with calcification of arteries, kidney stones, etc. Magnesium helps the body use D3.
Thank you SeasdeSusie
Yes she was taking d3+k2,but not now.
Now she is taking cod liver oil,calcium,magnezium,b12 injections 1000mcg (my decision) lab result 318 ranges ( 200-1100 pg/ml),folic acid, liquid iron(my decision)because her iron serum is 13.8 range(9.0-30.4 umol/l) she's feeling better, her feet started to get warm,no more strong aches on feet and toes, improvement on tounge even tho she doesn't have salivia,at all,I'm suspecting that she doesn't have tears too,i don't i think doctor is blind or just ignoring the case, thank again 😊
Has she had calcium tested? She shouldn't be taking that unless she's been tested and is deficient.
Also, has ferritin been tested? Iron is complicated and if her ferritin is high then it may not be a good idea to take supplemental iron.
You mentioned below that you don't know if she needs more D3. She doesn't need to raise her level more, it's at the top of the recommended range, but it would be a good idea to retest in 3 months to see if the cod liver oil is keeping her level stable.
Lispuhiza,
Vit D is a good level.
Was she taking Vit D with K2 which improves the uptake of calcium to the bones ? .
Vit D is fat soluble so needs to be taken with good fats or eaten with the main meal of the day.
Thank you radd
Yes she was taking d3+k2,they were oral ampules 300.000 iu/ml every four week, for 2 month than she stooped after testing the d3,also since 2016 she regularly takes cod liver oil (with high vit A and vit d) still takes them, but i don't if she needs more d3 or not??
If she's taking code liver oil, she'll still need K2. Cod liver oil might not be the best source as it can result in too much vitamin A
Thank you angel of the North,i didn't know that cod liver oil can cause over dose of vit A,i thought taking cod liver oil it could be safe??
Do you think she should stop it??
Not necessarily. But keep an eye out for Vit A overdose symptoms:
Acute vitamin A toxicity: drowsiness, irritability, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting.
increased pressure on the brain
Chronic vitamin A toxicity: blurry vision or other vision changes, swelling of the bones, bone pain, poor appetite, dizziness, nausea and vomiting, sensitivity to sunlight, dry, rough skin, itchy or peeling skin, cracked fingernails, skin cracks at the corners of your mouth, mouth ulcers, yellowed skin (jaundice), hair loss, respiratory infection, confusion
But there are lots of other causes of many of these symptoms
Thanks Angel of the North, one soft gel of cod liver oil contains 800mcg of vit A,do you think it's dangerous?
That should be no problem, but some cod liver oil has extra vit A added. Are you sure there's enough D in one capsule? I've never taken capsules but 1tspn contains about 850-4,000 IU (255-1200 mcg) of vitamin A and 400iu of vit D. So about the max amount of A you should take in a day and less than half the vit D, so you could end up with too much A and not enough D.
Pure cod liver oil 1000mg,
Providing Omega 3 fatty acids of wich:Eicosapentaenoic Acid(EPA),
Docosaherxaenoic Acid(DHA),
Vitamin A 800 IU (%NRV -100),
VIT D, 5 IU (%NRV-100).
I think there isn't enough D3,she need extra d3 supplements, but in our country doesn't exist d3+k2 together, they're separately and just in form of injection, she needs supplementing a lot more than 10 supplements she takes for the moment (feet and toes aches, brain atrophy-confusion, shrunken thyroid,Diabet 2, cholesterol and triglycerid, osteoporosis) could you imagine what does she first needs? And what about the liver?overloaded liver?
I would say that getting enough D3 was more important than vit A or EPA and DHA, which you can get by eating liver and oily fish instead of supplements. I always buy K2 separately from vit D - it is in natto and certain cheeses like gouda and jarlsberg. ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...
For liver, beetroot juice and/or milk thistle as a supplement. A keto diet is often helpful for Type 2 diabetes (high triglycerides come from too much carbohydrate as well)
